A female United Kingdom age 30-35, anonymous writes:

i was clinically depressed for five years, i was put on prozac (a medication) and councilling all that. i had a bad family life. then i met my boyfriend. we were realy happy, he helped me so much when i told him about it all and helped me get better. untill a few months after our one year anniversary he became friends with this girl, who happened to be my friend as well. i went away to rome to come home and hear that they'd been flirting, he'd gone to her music rehearsal with her, secret walks. he denyed it meant anything. this girl then asked me for advice because she thought she was depressed, i helped her to the point that it hurt because it reminded me so much of all that i'd been through. on our year and a half anniversary he kissed her, we broke up, a day later he asked her out. 6 weeks later he tells me he's sorry, he didnt mean it, he still loves me, she's nothing. he breaks up with her, i take him back, only to find he's had sex with her, within six weeks!we'd decided to take that step 10months into our realtionship, after alot of talking about it, they didn't use contraception. she claimed she had a misscarriage. i took him back anyway but i'm still in pain and i still fell sick and i can't stand it. he literally broke me, i got il i couldn't sleep or eat for weeks and my dad was so worried about me, he found me wandering on the street and had to take me home. i don't know wheather he's worth it anymore, he did take me out of depression, but he may have put me back in. should i stay and try and work things through, or has he done too much for me to stay? please help, im so confusd and this really hurts. kate

A male reader, rcn United States +, writes (8 September 2007):

rcn agony auntGet out of it, you're done. There is something so many are missing. I read a lot of stories, and answer few compared to what I read. Your missing the boat. LOVE DOESN'T HURT. Relationships are not meant to (1) solve problems (2) hurt either person (3) be controlling (4) be abusive.

What you've done by him cheating, then doing it again after apologizing is showing him you will allow this behavior.

My advice is to stay single for a while, and with your parents help really work on yourself and your depression. You can't give yourself in whole to a relationship if your not whole.

I can't recommend treatments or medication. I'm not a doctor. But let me tell you a quick story, then you judge by your own research. I had a friend who was clinically depressed who decided to try a treatment called ECT. It's also called shock therapy or electro convulsive treatment. Scary names, and the thought oh my, why would he consider. After doing months of research on the subject what he found is 100% success rate in treating depression after the first treatment with 0 known side affects. Just remember I did not in any way recommend this treatment. I was simply telling a story.
