Why after I told him we should only stay friends because I saw him with no interest did he go back to flirting?

Met this guy went on a great date talked about two to three times a week then the phone calls and texts just stop (we were seeing eachother for a couple of months). After a week of no contact i called it off and he said it would be a shame if we never talked again since i was an "amazing women". He said he would keep in touch (knowing what that ment before i thought nothing of it) two days later he was right on cue with talking and flirting again, even taking to me on days he normally does not (like when we first started dating). What gives thats all i wanted in the first place. Why now after i called off dating/seeing eachother does he now try to make an effort?
