Question - (4 September 2012) 6 Answers - (Newest, 5 September 2012)
A female United States age 26-29, anonymous writes:

I'm 15, and i frequently use the website tumblr. i am a sophomore. i made a post with advice for freshman, and at the end i said (jokingly) "if you scream when you see your friends, i'll hit you". this girl messaged me anonymously saying things like "oh you think you're so cool you wouldn't hit me idgaf (i dont give a fuck) what you think you were just a freshman a year ago stop trying to act cool" i responded with basically "chill out, and i will hit you" again, jokingly! i wouldn't actually hit her! she flipped out! she said oh my uncles a cop he won't like it when he finds out you laid a finger on me and i just said "we don't know each other or live near each other, and running to the cops from a light hit on the shoulder is pretty sad". it escalated quickly. the girl was mean to me, she kept saying I'm acting cool but i'm not, assuming i'm shy and would never say any of it out loud. she made one post saying..something...i deleted the messages but regardless it was really rude and obnoxious. i said "this isn't to be rude or spiteful, this is a legitimate warning, not a threat, but if you don't change your attitude, people will beat you up. there are people in high school who will have no problem witht that, regardless of consequences." she messaged back "i take that as a threat not a warning, i'm calling my uncle (the cop)". after that i responded with i'm sorry you took it too far, couldn't take a joke, or advice.

I'm flipping out! i could get fined..i might not get into college..ahh! what would happen to me? whats the procedure? please help me!

and also, i understand my behavior might've been rude, please don't lecture me. i have enough on my mind..

A female reader, Ciar Canada + , writes (5 September 2012):

Ciar agony auntChances are nothing will happen. Her uncle, the cop, has far bigger fish to fry than a teenage girl posting nonsense on a social networking site. He is not going to make himself look foolish in front of his colleagues or set himself up for some kind of disciplinary action by seeking vengence against his teenage niece's rivals.

I would delete the whole thread from start to finish.

She's probably not going to do anything. Ignore people like that and don't talk about hitting people/beating people up in any context. Everyone takes everything too literally these days and ruin people's lives over nothing.

A female reader, Candid Cally United States +, writes (5 September 2012):

Is there any way that you notate to indicate that you are 'joking' online? If you don't indicate that you are joking or being sarcastic, people will assume you are serious and you have no way to prove that you were joking.

My fiance uses /s.

At first I didn't know what that meant and assumed it was a typo and disregarded it. If he had told me what /s meant, he could have prevented us from having a few nasty arguments.

/s means he is being sarcastic...joking.

I guess what I am trying to say is you need to consistently note when you are joking and being sarcastic AND you need to make sure your audience knows that the notation means you are joking and not to be taken seriously.

Perhaps you should blog about people not understanding your personality? Maybe if you write about how you would not actually hit people who scream and how people who know you know this...you can sve yourself from getting in trouble.

BondGirl72 agony auntYou are spending too much time online living in the virtual world. Would you say this to the girl in real life? If you wouldn't, then don't say it online.

I also agree with the "trolls" statement. Don't respond to stupid stuff...even when it's tempting. Don't reply to the girl period. Rise about this petty nonsense and just let her talk to herself. She probably does a lot of it anyway.

person12345 agony auntWhat you have encountered is called an internet troll. Do not feed the trolls! When you get stupid messages like that you just need to ignore them. I know you didn't ask for this, but seriously don't write things like I'm going to slap you or kick or bite or stomp or shoot or otherwise threaten people. It makes you sound immature and like a jerk, even if you are kidding, yes even if you write jk after it or something. You could say that in real life with your friends, but online it ALWAYS comes across badly. If you need to use a tone of sarcasm to say it out loud, then it won't come across well when you write it online.

Just delete the account if you want. And stop feeding the troll. Block this person and don't respond.
