Is it wrong for me to read these books even though I'm technically more pure then most girls my age?

A female United States age 30-35, anonymous writes:

Hello! I'm going to get straight to the point and not beat around the bush. I'm a 18 year old virgin and I love to read romance novels. Not just the nice sappy ones, I like to read the sexy intense one with wild sex in them. I love historic novels the most. I was wondering if it's wrong to like this? I know people say that virgins are well the people with the dirtiest minds. I don't really think dirty, but I won't deny all of my thoughts. I just want to know if it's wrong for me to read these books even though I'm technically more pure then most girls my age. So what do you say?

I'd say its definitely normal. If I told you otherwise, I'd be a hypocrite. I'm almost 1z and absolutely love adult romance novels. I've been reading them since I was 14. A lot of girls around our age do. I know one woman who said she began reading them when she was 12. Anyway you're not alone!

A female reader, iloveblue Canada +, writes (8 June 2011):

iloveblue agony auntNo, there's nothing wrong with it. I was also like you before when I was a virgin and my past time was to read these kinds of literary pieces.

Believe me, when you experience the physical sex, you'd say it's not near the description you read in those books. Or unless that's how I saw it for myself.

The one written in books is mixed with, shall I say, art or exaggeration. The real first time sex is different and differs from each sexual experience you'll have. However, it also differs from each individual how their sex experience is to them.

And by the way, the term purity you mean, is it pure in mind or physically as in virgin? Ofcourse you are no longer sexually innocent as in you have knowledge about sex and all those kinky ideas. But this does not in anyway make you less pure than the other virgins.

No worries dear, enjoy reading.

LazyGuy agony auntA dirty mind is a joy forever.

The worst you can get from reading a dirty book is a paper cut. Actual dirty sex? There is a whole annex in the hospital dedicated to what you can get from that. The maternity ward.

Honeypie agony auntEVERYBODY who has been though puberty has a dirty mind. Some more then others. Having a "craving" for intense fantasies is again, pretty normal. Otherwise there wouldn't be such a HUGE selection of book in this genre.

Does it make you less pure? I doubt it.

I think you would be surprised at how many girls you age and older reads the same books as you do.

Is it wrong? For me, personally, I don't think so. I think having a creative imagination is good, whether it comes to art or sex.

A female reader, chigirl Norway +, writes (8 June 2011):

chigirl agony auntI got recommended Anne Rice, the Sleeping Beauty Novels, which are three books.

The Claiming of Sleeping Beauty / Beauty's Release / Beauty's Punishment.

I know Anne Rice from other books by her, and she's excellent.

Having a dirty mind doesn't make you impure. Stuffing a penis in every orifice will make you less pure.. or not pure at all. Fantasy is fantasy, imagination is imagination. When people talk about a virgin being pure it's pretty much the physical aspect of it that is referred to.

There's a mental purity as well, don't get me wrong, but that's more complicated. I've known of persons who are not virgins, but are so gullible and innocent at heart that they hardly know what they're doing.

A female reader, CindyCares Italy +, writes (8 June 2011):

CindyCares agony aunt I have objections to your readings only on literary, not moral, grounds.

I am not sure I know what books you are talking about , but I suppose ..Harlequin books ? Barbara Cartland ? Stuff like that ?.

Oh the horror.

Listen, if you want to read something highly erotic and sensual AND well written ( killing two birds with a stone ) read D.H. Lawrence, or Henry Miller, or Anais Nin.

For the rest, no, there is nothing wrong in reading sexy stuff ( unless it's your ONLY pastime ). Sex and erotism are a huge part of human experience, you may feel not ready yet to experimenting this with your body , but I don't think there is anything wrong in the meantime in being curios and intellectually interested in sex.

A female reader, Aunty Honest United Kingdom +, writes (8 June 2011):

Aunty Honest agony auntThere's nothing wrong with what you're doing. Just because you're a virgin doesn't mean you don't have a sexual appetite or curiosity and if these books help satisfy that then I don't see a problem with you reading them. I think it's very natural to explore your sexuality and this is a great way of doing it and still staying a virgin for as long as you want to. Denying and repressing sexual feelings doesn't really work and this sounds like a very healthy way of experimenting and understanding yourself sexually. Reading a book isn't dirty or wrong, what you're doing is completely natural so try not to feel guilty or anxious about it.

Hope that helps

A reader, anonymous, writes (8 June 2011):

Hey,

You are gifted with a very good imagination and the books give you a pleasure that not many people are open minded enough to experience. When reading these books it makes you imagine the intense feelings of passion and this makes you sample the feeling as well. I dont know for sure but I think that you fear that real sex wont measure up to the sex you read about.

When you read these novels you are not doing anything wrong. Your getting alot more out of these books than just enjoying the sex chapters. Your learning skills that most girls your age do not have.

Hope that helps.
