Hi.

Both my parents smoke (roughly 5-a-day each). They smoke outside or in the porch with the door open.

Recently I have noticed I hav been getting yellow nails no one else has at home because I have the longest nails.

I don't smoke!

What can I do to cover/prevent this? (Nail varnish isn't allowed at school- they're very strict)

Tisha-1 agony auntI found this at prevention.com:

Yellow Nails

The clue: As the name suggests, your nails will have a subtle or dramatic yellow tinge.

What it means: It could be a number of things, from nail fungus, to psoriasis, to stains from smoking. On a lighter note, your affection for dark nail polish could also be to blame.

What to do about it: If your nails are stained, simply soak them in denture cleaner to remove the stain. If the yellowing persists, gets worse, or is accompanied by pain, it could be a fungal infection. You wouldn’t be alone—roughly 50% of all nail discoloration is caused by fungus—but it still carries a gross factor to make you avoid sandals forever. Unfortunately, fungal infections can be tricky to conquer, especially if it’s been ignored. Yellowing is also seen in psoriasis patients, as a side effect of certain medications, and a result of a rare condition called yellow nails syndrome. If you notice a change in your nails, see your doctor.

Aunty Babbit agony auntPassive smoking does not make your nails go yellow.

Over wearing nail varnish or use of removers can cause yellowing of the nails.

Poor diet can affect your nails as can hair colorants if you dye your hair.

Fungal infections can cause yellowing of the nails.

If it's none of the above see a pharmacist or doctor.

I hope this helps AB x

A reader, anonymous, writes (8 October 2013):

If you're using nail polish remover I'm pretty sure this is the cause. My nails ONLY turn yellow when I use nail polish remover, not nail polish, only the remover. What I do is let the nail polish wear off until I can scrape the rest off by using another fingernail and then repaint them.

My advise is to contact your gp, then your gp can give you a professional opinion of why you have yellow nails. To me it doesn't sound like your parents smoking is to blame for your yellow nails. Unless you are holding your nails to the smoke off the cigarettes I don't see how it relates. However yellow nails isn't normal so it's best to inform your gp.

A female reader, anonymous, writes (8 October 2013):

It's probably because you've been handling something that has caused the yellowing - various chemicals can cause yellowing - especially solvents like nail polish remover, painting and decorating materials, even natural colourants found in some foods can cause discolouration if you handles them alot.

The key here is what have you been handling - smokers get nicotine stains because they hold the cigarette between their fingers while they're smoking it. Even if you handled their fag-butts you wouldn't get stains.

Intrigued3000 agony auntYou should really go see a doctor. The smoking has nothing to do with this.

A female reader, anonymous, writes (8 October 2013):

It's not likely from cigarettes. Nail polish/and remover alone often causes nails to yellow, even if you are only wearing it on the weekends or school breaks. Sometimes just buffing them out will remove the yellow appearance, if that's what it is.

It might be steming from a medical reason, so you want to ask your parents to take you to the doctor to find out what's going on.

Tisha-1 agony auntIt you are putting on and removing nail polish all the time because if the school policy, then the yellowing is likely the remnants of your nail polish.

If you are not doing that, see the doctor!

So_Very_Confused agony auntI agree with Honey pie... if they are smoking 5 a day outside their smoking is not really the cause of the yellowing nails.

are the beds yellow? or the tips? you may need to seek medical attention if it's nail fungus.

A female reader, Honeypie United States + , writes (8 October 2013):

Honeypie agony auntIF they only smoke 5 a day and outside, the yellowing of your nails might not be from the cigarettes.

There are several things that can cause yellowing of the nails.

Iron and zinc deficiencies. Nail fungus, an internal disorder and excessive use of nail varnish/polish. (Since you can't use vanish at your school you can pretty much rule that one out).

Is this a new thing?

I had extremely long nails when I smoked (20 a day) and my nails were never yellow. So for you to get yellow nails from second hand smoke (which is done outside) is odd.

I would first have a doctor take a look.

You can also use lemon juice and soak your nails in them it has a bleaching effect.

The drugstores also have these white pencils that you can use underneath the nail to make them look more white. BUT if there is a medical condition it can also disguise that, so off to the doctors first.

A female reader, anonymous, writes (8 October 2013):

Well you can only get yellow nails if you are smoking and even then, if they are proper cigarettes it would take alot more then 5 a day.

I'm don't medic but your nails are not from smoke. I think you should maybe see a doctor as you may not be getting a certain vitamin that you need.

You can buy nail whiteners for more stores like bo*ts.
