Hi, i am a 15yr old male incase the above says otherwise. I masturbate frequently but recently have had a problem. I occasionaly get sharp pains in my head for a short while (for about 15-30mins). Also, I don't know if this is relevant but I think I am goign through puberty but I am not sure.

I have masturbated for about a year now and I have never had this problem before and I really don't want to see a doctor or talk to anyone I know.

Is this a problem?

Any help welcomed and if you need more info, just ask! Thanks...

too much masturbation could make you get head aches. I know from personal experience.

I agree that you should document times and dates that you masterbate and times and dates when you get headaches...this way you could see cleary if they correlate in time. The other advice I would have is to not masterbate for a month and see if you are headache free for that period of time, the reason I recommend a month is because I read that it takes that amount of time for chemicals to adjust from the brain release of orgasm. If you are looking at a computer moniter for long periods of time that could certainly lead to headaches. Figure all that out before you go to the doctor or he/she will only be playing a guessing game, headaches are caused by many things, including stress and lack of oxygen or not enough water....good luck and let us know what you find out.

A female reader, anonymous, writes (1 July 2008):

What you're describing sounds like cluster headaches, which are sometimes associated with migraine. You're a bit young, maybe, to be experiencing them, but if you've hit puberty, that'd be abt right. Migraine is a neurological disorder that's not entirely understood, but we do know that it's tied, in part, to vaso-dilation (the blood vessels in your head getting really dilated). This is why you can feel the throbbing -- it's actually your pulse in all the veins, capillaries, etc., in your head. It's also why caffeine (which is a vaso-constrictor) can sometimes help relieve a migraine (you'll note that it's one of the ingredients in Excedrin Migraine) - it clamps the blood vessels down to a smaller size.

I'm a girl, so I don't know from personal experience, but I'm told that a guy's erection pulls a lot of blood from other parts of his body. I don't know exactly how that would affect the blood vessels in your head, but it makes sense to me that they could be related. Or maybe it's just total coincidence.

In any event, if you're having a high load of headache pain at other times of the day, it's something worth discussing with your doctor. There are many lifestyle modifications you may wish to consider (some ppl have food triggers, etc.), and if those don't work, there are medications that may help.

A male reader, Danielepew Mexico + , writes (1 July 2008):

Danielepew agony auntMasturbation doesn't produce headaches. Go see a doctor because the headaches you have had all of your life surely have a different cause, and THAT you need to have checked. You don't have to mention masturbation; the doctor knows the two are not related.

A female reader, lexilou United Kingdom +, writes (30 June 2008):

lexilou agony auntIf you are more prone to headaches then think about it, when you masturbate you probably concentrate very hard and screw your eyes shut tight, unless of course you are looking at pictures!! I somtimes go a bit dizzy when I have had to really work at getting somewhere (yes women masturbate too!!!!)

So go the docs, please, just dont mention the masturbation just tell him youve had some real bad headaches lately and are worried xx

The Gentle Man agony auntI used to suffer from constant headaches and they did come on fiercly when I masturbated or even tapped my head. I went to the doctor and he gave me a course of tablets which got rid of the problem.

Going to the Doctor is the best thing to do.

A female reader, anonymous, writes (30 June 2008):

It probably isn't anything to worry about. I've read that adrenaline and endorphins (which build when you're getting turned on), quickly diminish after reaching orgasm. This drastic change happening in such a short time could be the cause the sharp pains you've described.

A male reader, mr,no/name United Kingdom +, writes (30 June 2008):

i shouldn't think it would be related to masturbating, but i would surely recommend seeing a doctor about this. If you really dont want to see a doctor then speak to a mate about it. surely u wont feel embarrased there. and before anything make sure you try like a paracetamol. They always help my headaches.

but good luck with it mate.

A male reader, no_issues United States +, writes (30 June 2008):

no_issues agony auntEverything is linked to masturbation, when you think about it. As for doctors, if you don't want to ask your regular doctor for whatever reason ask him for a referral to someone else. Or go to an anonymous STD clinic -- they won't even ask your real name, and will pretend you were never there.

A female reader, lexilou United Kingdom +, writes (30 June 2008):

lexilou agony auntok you need to work out if you only get the pains when you masturbate or at any other time.

If you just get them at all times you must see your doctor, its always best to get it checked. Even if you only get them when you masturbate you should still be checked out. I have read somewhere that some men do get headaches after ejaculating but I dont know how common it is. If you spoke to a male doctor so you are more comfy then dont worry about having to mention masturbation, he is not there to judge you and trust me he has probably heard it all before x

Ok. I'll think about a doctor but I did leave something out, I have suffered with headaches all my life, do you think it could be a coincidence that I had a couple while masturbating?

A male reader, ChiRaven United States +, writes (30 June 2008):

ChiRaven agony auntIt's unlikely that the two are related, but there is the possibility that the headaches could be related to a change in blood pressure that comes with orgasm. If you haven't had a thorough physical exam for a while it would probably be a good idea to have one. This could be a symptom of a more serious condition that requires medical attention.

And by all means make sure you have time with the doctor by yourself, and mention the situation to him. You can't embarrass a doctor with anything like that, and yes, there are two kinds of people in this world, those who admit they masturbate and those who lie about it.
