LilPixie agony auntYes and no. A lot of women do still get bleeding each month while pregnant just as if they were having a normal period.

I have heard of a few occasions where the women didn't even know they were pregnant until they went into labour because every month they were still getting what they thought to be their period and didn't develop a proper bump either... It's just not seen as a proper period because we're not supposed to get a period while pregnant.

Get a pregnancy test, if it comes up negative and you still think you may be pregnant go to a doctor.

A female reader, Nime United States +, writes (20 September 2010):

Nime agony auntYes, especially if you are on hormonal birth control like the pill, where there are placebo days. For many women on the pill it can be difficult to detect a pregnancy because the cycle of active synthetic hormones to placebo can still cause an apparently regular period. I'm a near-perfect user of the pill, but even the pill is not 100% effective, so to be safe I take a pregnancy test once every 5-6 weeks... It may be overkill, but my boyfriend and I are both in grad school right now and definitely don't want a baby within the next decade. I choose to take a test every 5-6 weeks because 8 weeks is the deadline for terminating a pregnancy with RU486 (pill); after that it's aspiration or surgery, something I would never want to go through. I've never had an abortion (or been pregnant), just researching this stuff so I know what to do in a crisis, so don't hate please. :)

Honeypie agony auntYes, you can have what seems like periods, however they will not be regular. I had what I thought was my period with my second child for all 9 months of pregnancy. ( Didn't find out I was pregnant til 4 months in, once she started kicking and moving).

Contact your doctor. You should NOT be bleeding during pregnancy.

A female reader, chigirl Norway +, writes (20 September 2010):

chigirl agony auntI am not going to begin arguing against anyone here, and whether they are called periods or not... But my mother had her period until she was 5 months pregnant with me, and I have also heard about other women who had their period, not just spotting, and regularly, and never realized they were pregnant. It happens.

But, it is not that common. The more common thing is for women to skip their periods because of stress of hormonal imbalances, or being ill. If you continue to skip your periods you should see your doctor about it. You could also see your doctor now and ask about the skipped period, and they will take a pregnancy test as a part of finding out why the period was missing. But like I said, a missing period here or there is quite normal. But if you keep missing it, and often, you should talk to your doctor about it.

Also, if you wonder about being pregnant, take a pregnancy test. And remember to stay protected during sex.

A female reader, romany United Kingdom +, writes (20 September 2010):

romany agony auntHi,

Xanthic thats not altogether true, there is an implantation bleed that some women have, implantation bleeds happens about 10-12 days after the egg is fertislised, and it is possible to have a positive pregnancy result, before the implantation bleed is seen.

You need to get yourself off to the dr, and get checked over, as doing a pregnancy test wont tell you anything, as a pregnancy test measures hCG levels and if you have miscarried, it can take up to 19 days for the hCG levels to disappear.

The only sure way of knowing now, is going to the doctors.

Good luck.

A female reader, xanthic United States +, writes (20 September 2010):

xanthic agony auntNo, you can't. It's normal for your period to skip a month occasionally at a young age.

At your age, you should already know how your reproductive system works. Look it up and educate yourself before deciding to have sex again, otherwise you could end up pregnant and have no idea why or how it could have been prevented.

A female reader, Red591 United States +, writes (20 September 2010):

Red591 agony auntyou can spot but a full on period is unlikely. If you were pregnant and had that much blood then there would be something wrong with the pregnancy. You can however bleed a little in first trimester but from what I have read it is far less and far less time than a period. I think you are just NOT PREGNANT. sometimes when we are worried or scared our brains can make everything a "signal" of what we fear. get a pregnancy test and when it says no, and it will, take a breather

A female reader, dmartin89 United Kingdom +, writes (20 September 2010):

dmartin89 agony auntNo, it is impossible to have a "period" of you are pregnant. Some women who say that they had bleeding when they were pregnant were experiencing light bleeding that sometimes comes with the stretching of the uterus to accommodate the baby. You feel like you are pregnant? Breast tendernesss, grouchiness, sore abdomen, hot sweats, dizziness are all signs of a period. Take a test, its the ONLY way to know
