A female United States age 36-40, anonymous writes:

This is a question for the aunts (male and female) who are currently, or have been, married.

How long before marriage did you know your spouse? How long were the two of you a couple? Are you happy with how long you waited to take that step, sorry that you didn't wed sooner, or wishing that you would have waited longer to settle down with someone?

For those who are wondering, I ask because my partner is now hinting at the "m" word, and while I love him more than anything in this world I wonder if we have been together long enough (slightly less than a year) to have a good chance at a successful marriage. We are both in our mid-twenties, if that helps. Thank you for any answers :)

C. Grant agony auntWe knew each other maybe two years before we started dating, dated for five years, lived together a year, then got married. Just had our 23rd anniversary. Wouldn't change anything.

YouWish agony auntI knew my husband for 5 1/2 years before we married. We dated 5 years beforehand (friends for six months beforehand).

We didn't live together before marriage, but took it slow due to college/career and my wanting to be sure. Before I met him, I would adamant on never being married. I couldn't be happier about the change of heart.

We just celebrated our 13-year anniversary. If I had it to do all over again, I wouldn't change a thing. Perfect length, perfect timing, and I am happily married -- I look forward to growing old with him. We still hold hands in public and cuddle during movies.
