 Well I always get an erection every time me and my girlfriend kiss, from the very first kiss. I can't really offer much insight into it not really happening for him with ex's, as before my current girlfriend it was only ever "pecks" and I never had that reaction then.
Either he's being genuine, and it is you (it may also be that you're 10 years younger than him, a teenager, that might turn him on a lot). And as others have said - it could be that he's trying to make you feel special, which is sweet in a way, but if it means he's not telling the truth it's not exactly great.

Or, it means I must be a hell of a good kisser, because that is the standard , normal response I'have always got from a passionate kiss. Nothing to write home about, as far as I know- at least at his age.

As for it only ever happening once before that sounds like a load of bullshit to me. I get an erection from just holding my girlfriend without any sexual contact. If he gets erections from kissing then it happens whenever he kisses a girl he's sexually attracted to. Something tells me he's trying to make you feel special or something.
In fact something about this whole situation seems to be a bit off. You're 19 yet you on't know what an erection means. You say he's 29 yet he hasn't explained to you what an erection means and then he says it's only happened once before? Very odd.
