A female United Kingdom age 30-35, anonymous writes:

hi

i have been trying to lose weight for about a week and i am not expecting any results as i am not on a drastic diet, jsut healthier eating. I want to be much slimmer by summer 08 and i want the weight to stay off.

however, it is my birthday next monday and my friends will bring me a cake and i will go out for a meal with my parents. I do not want to refuse or be picky about either because a)it would be rude and ungrateful and b) for me a birthday is not a birthday without some cake!

what i am wondering is, if i let go on my birthday just for the day and eat what i like, will it hold my diet back as in, will all my hardwork in the last 2 weeks be for nothing?

or will it not make much difference if i am unhealthy for one day and then straight back onto the diet?

although it is by summer that i want to see results, i would like to see them or feel them asap as this would give me a much needed confidence boost i feel :)

pls help or advice

thanks

Dawnie agony auntYou could have your birthday as a diet free day, without going mad. You could have your meal out with your parents and still have some cake. Maybe a few days prior to your birthday you could be a little more strict with your diet, allowing you to enjoy yourself on the day, or maybe do a little more exercise than normal? To be honest though i don't see it being a problem and i don't think you will ruin any effort you have made so far, not unless you spend the whole day eating junk. Enjoy your birthday.

Just one day wont matter as long as you go stright back on the diet afterwards. Infact many diets plans recommend a "naughty day" once as week to keep you going, so you dont slip off the track.

Enjoy the cake on your birthday!

desirewhitefire agony auntFor one thing, you are much too young to be worrying about your weight like this. You say it's for healthier eating, which is good, but at the end of your question you say that you want to look slimmer by summer and you really need the confidence boost. I think you just want to lose the weight so you'll be thinner and it really doesn't have anything to do with eating healthier. I was your age once, too, and yes, I understand what you're going through, and no, you're not the only girl that feels fat.

Cake is not going to kill you. If you sit down and eat the whole cake, yes, that's a problem, but one piece isn't going to do any harm. Never punish yourself for indulging in sweets by not eating for the rest of the day, or the rest of the week.

Ask your mother to take you to a dietitian and set up a plan for you to eat healthy. She won't get upset if you tell her you don't know what you should be eating to be healthy. She may even be impressed at you wanting to stop eating junky foods. Just never overdo it.

El Dente agony auntYou should be fine with a bit of cake...

It's only a bit and its only for a day, not too much though because I know it's difficult to get carried away. As for the resturaunt, if you're that worried just find something that you think will be healthier for you. you have until the summer and that's ages so you should be fine.

PM me if you want to talk more.

Hi! You sound very resolved to lose weight by summer, and you do not mention your current body type, or if a doctor would say you really need to lose weight, so I will just give a general answer. I would say that, it being January, it will not make much difference at all if you go off your diet for one night. Especially if you just have a normal meal and one piece of cake! That truly is not very many more calories, and you'll probably wear it off in the excitement of having a good time!! You don't have to "pig out", just have one piece, may be a smallish one!

Enjoy your birthday!!! Happy Birthday!!
