A male United Kingdom age 30-35, anonymous writes:

Hi, I'm new here so be kind!

Well, I'm 20 years old and have had a girlfriend for almost a year! We're really close, still both live with our parents but spend most of our time together. We do virtually everything together and share only a few mates.

We work at the same place in a bar, (that's how we met) and everything was fine until this new girl started. She is our age and happened to mention that she thought I was fit to a mate of my girlfriend's. She kept mentioning this, not knowing this girl was my girlfriend's mate and my girlfriend got pretty annoyed and disliked her.

Now we both chat to her at work but I am beginning to like her just as a friend, nothing more as I would never cheat on my girlfriend and don't even fancy this girl. My girlfriend is annoyed thinking she can't trust me and monitors me. I speak to her a lot when my girlfriend isn't about. Am I wrong to do so? Should I not speak to her? She doesn't ever flirt with me but my girlfriend thinks she will make a move on me. Am I wrong to talk to her? What should I do as I like her as a friend?

Yeah, your girlfriend is paranoid. She sounds like she is jealous and annoyed. Deep down, your girlfriend probably knows you aren't about to stray away, but it annoys her a bit. Think about it, even if you trust your girlfriend 100%, if you heard that some dude your girlfriend worked with liked her, wouldn't you be a little annoyed that she had to work with him and you couldn't be there to make sure everything stayed appropriate and nothing more than friendly if even that?

You probably cannot avoid talking to her since you work together, just keep it appropriate. Reassure your girlfriend as that is about all you can do, and if the other girl escalates it to another level, make sure you lay it down that you aren't going to do anything to harm your current relationship with your girlfriend. If she doesn't take no for an answer, depending on the type of boss you have, he/she might be able to give her a talking to. But this is a big "what if" for the future.

It's perfectly understandale why your girlfriend is paranoid- if a new guy had started at your work and began telling everyone how fit your girlfiend was, you might have concerns as well. By all means remain friendly with this girl, but be sure not to get to close to her, otherwise people may start to talk. In the meantime, stay calm when your girlfriend voices her concerns over this and keep reassuring her how gorgeous she is and how she is the only girl you want. It may take a while, but your girlfriend will eventually realise that you mean it.
