hi, i have been taking my pill as normal, about 5 days in i had unprotected sex then today, about 4 days later i found one of my pills on the floor... it can only be from this month as i just moved out.

i will be taking a pregnancy test when i actually can hopefully its negative.

anyone done this before. i am having my withdrawl bleed as well now. i think the pill was from 2 days ago which means i didnt have a pill for 24 hours a day after having unprotected sex

any reassurance or help would be appreciated as my boyfriend of 2 years has now gone for good over this issue!

A female reader, chigirl Norway +, writes (4 October 2011):

chigirl agony auntYou are protected from day one if you start with birth control pills on the first day of your period. If you start at any other day you have to take them for 7 days and then you are protected. You do not need to be on them for a month before you are protected.

Of course, the protection stops if you skip a pill, and then you have to start all over with another 7 days before you are protected. The protection lasts for around 30 or some hours after you've taken a pill (can't remember the exact time-line, but it is over 24 hours), which is why it isn't critical if you take a pill one hour later or earlier the following day.

All this is things you, poster, should ask your doctor about. They will be able to properly explain it to you so you can understand how the pill works and what you must do if you skip a pill. What to do if you miss a pill should also be explained in the leaflet that comes with the pills.

So_Very_Confused agony auntUnless it's changed a lot 2 weeks of BCP will NOT protect you from pregnancy. I always thought you had to be on them a month.

Call your doctor and ask what to do....

A female reader, chigirl Norway +, writes (4 October 2011):

chigirl agony auntI know it is too late to take the morning after pill, but I would still suggest you take it as, like I said, it can take up to 5 days for sperm to connect with your egg. It is just so much more likely that this has already happened within the first 3 days.

You can still take the morning after pill even if you have been on birth control. They are not the same pill. The morning after pill only works to prevent a pregnancy, and if the pregnancy has already occurred then it will do no good. However, if you are still not pregnant it can help you! The morning after pill doesn not "lose" it's effect at any point! It's just not of any point if you already are pregnant, which is more likely to have already happened. HOWEVER, it can take up to 5 days after unprotected sex to get pregnant.

As you do not have any other options I's take the morning after pill despite it being late.

person12345 agony auntYou can't take the morning after pill if you're on the regular birth control anyways, they are the same hormones. It's unlikely that this made you pregnant, but if you miss your next period get a pregnancy test.

A female reader, person12345 United States +, writes (4 October 2011):

person12345 agony auntIt's highly unlikely, but still possible. It's too late to take plan B, not to mention it would make you very sick with that many hormones in your body. The only thing to do is wait and see if you get your next period and continue taking the pill.

What I'm a little confused about is why your boyfriend would leave you because you forgot to take a pill. If he's so paranoid as to leave you because you forgot to take a pill then he needs to step up and take more responsibility for his own genetic material and wear a condom. Anyone who's that big an ass is someone you should definitely say good riddance to.

A female reader, charliesdevil73 United States +, writes (4 October 2011):

charliesdevil73 agony auntHow long you have been on the pill will affect your chances of getting pregnant. If you've started it recently, your chances are higher. But, if you've been on them for years and take them around the same time everyday and rarely forget a day, you will most likely not get pregnant. I have been on the pill for about seven years and my husband and I don't use any other protection but the pill. I have forgotten to take one here and there and have been fine. Like chigirl says, the pill is usually still in effect even after 24 hours of taking it, especially if you have been taking them for years.

You can still get your period for the first few months of being pregnant, so if you want to play it safe just take a test for the next couple months, especially if you don't get your period when you should. And I know it's hard to do, but try to relax. Don't let this be the only thing you think about. Chances are you are not pregnant, so just take a deep breath.

A female reader, chigirl Norway +, writes (3 October 2011):

chigirl agony auntWhat do you mean your boyfriend of 2 years has now gone? He was the one you had sex with, right? Did he get scared when you mentioned you might have not been on the pill? This part is confusing.

However, you should take a morning after pill. I know it is late, but it is still worth it. The sperm can take around 5 days to get to your egg, if you eat a morning after pill before that happens then you can still save it from happening. It's just unlikely.

However, yes, we all preach that one time unprotected sex can get you pregnant, which is true, but then again getting pregnant can also take you years of unprotected sex. There is no need to freak out or jump ship just yet. Take the morning after pill as soon as you can, and then wait one month for your next period. Wait for your period next month. Do not start up on the pills again, use condoms instead, you don't want to mess up your next menstruation/affect the fetus if you are pregnant. Then if you get your period you are not pregnant. However I'd take a pregnancy test just in case after you have had your period. If your period does not arrive, take the test on the day you were supposed to have it. It could be running late as you just came off the pill. Going off the pill can mess up your cycle so your menstruation doesn't arrive when it's supposed to.

The birth control pill still holds some effect in your body after you have stopped taking it. It isn't "pregnancyproof", but conceiving is more difficult when a woman is just off the pills.

You are probably not going to be pregnant. But, there's a chance. Calm down and relax both yourself and your boyfriend until you get a result back from a pregnancy test in one month. There is no need to plan marriage and babies just yet, when you do not know.

Most couples experience a pregnancy-scare at least once in their lives. First time pregnancy-scares can be.. terrifying. You are allowed to break a sweat. But calm down, most of us have been in your shoes. And at the end of the day, the world is not going to end if you are pregnant. You'll get by.

angelDlite agony auntdepends what sort of pill you are on for a start, the 'mini pill' offers less protection than the combined one. don't wait and throw it to chance until you can do a pregnancy test. you should see your doctor or family planning clinic about getting a 'morning after pill' (these can be taken up to 72 hours after the event, but obviously the sooner you can take it the better chance of it working. in Britain we can buy these from pharmacies or even get them free as long as the pharmacist is accredited to dispense them (and this depends on the pharmacist NOT the shop) I don't know if you have this service available to you in your country

Dear 'I don't think....'- If your boyfriend left don't go back and get him. Good riddance to bad rubbish! If he would abandon you like this then you didn't have a future anyway. he just like sex without responsibility.Next you can take a plan b drug for up to 3 days after you missed b/c with unprotected sex.If you do get pregnant and have a baby then accept the responsibility and count it a privelige to be a mother.
