A female United Kingdom age 30-35, anonymous writes:

Every boy I have slept with (2 boys, which were relationships) and after the relationships had finished they would say that I smelled down below (of fish) I was so humiliated, I'm a very clean person, and take pride in my hygiene and appearance. But I also know they are right about what they have said, I bath 2 times a day and after a few hours I smell again, its not a really bad smell but its not normal. I always use bubblebath and wash with purfumed soap could this be the cause? Sometimes I'm very itchy. Howwever I have now been in a relationship for 3 years and my partner has never complained and always licks me down there so I must not smell if he does that. Its really embarrassing so I don't know what to do now. Do you have any tips on how to get rid of this odour?

Does he use a condom or does he finish inside you? Because semen can throw off you pH and such. If my bf finishes inside me I definitely smell fishy.

aunt honesty agony auntPlease do not be embarrassed to go to your doctor, I know it can be cringe worthy thinking about it, but believe me your doctor is a professional and they will deal with it in a professional matter. Ask to see a female doctor as I am sure this would make it more comfortable.

Having two baths a day and using perfumed bubble bath probably only makes the smell worse, so go for a shower instead and if having a bath don't use any perfumed soaps. As for having a smell after sex, well this is completely normal. When your body is turned on it releases natural juices which have an odour to them, it is completely natural and it happens to everyone so please do not be paranoid.

Thanks for all your answers guys it has helped me. I want to go to the doctors but am so embarassed by it so it might take me a while to finally have the guts but I know I have to as iy won't ever be sorted. And no i don't have a dirty job, the reason why I bath 2 times a day is because I'm so paranoid incase it really is that bad (which it isn't too bad as some days I don't smell like that, seems to happen mainly after sex.

bubble bath and anything perfumed is very bad for down there. you can get special wash for down there but it is expensive. a cheaper alternative is Aqueous Cream, you buy it in chemists and Boots would have it also. it is about £3, and comes in a large white 500g tub. it is used for a variety of things, it can be used as a moisturiser or as a soap substitute. It is also commonly used by people with dry skin conditions such as excema and psoriasis, but also by people with no skin problems as it is not medicated and also is unperfumed. I started using it for ''down there'' when I repeatedly got hrush and cystitis, which are made worse by using perfumed soaps etc down there. I have had no problems since using it, it cleans the area well and leaves no residue and doesnt irritate or itch. I find it fantastic. try it! also I would see your doctor in case you have a yeast infection (nothing to be ashamed about) as it surely is a common problem. hope you get on well with the Aqueous cream! good luck

Honeypie agony auntGo see your doctor/GYN sounds like you have a Ph imbalance and this can be fixed easily, same for a yeast infection.

A reader, anonymous, writes (3 July 2012):

Sounds like you're overwashing the area OP.

OP vaginas have their own cleaning system that prevents infection by immersing it in a bath filled with strong chemicals twice a day you're probably messing with that system and leaving yourself open to trush.

If you don't mind me asking what's with the two baths a day anyway? Is your job a dirty one?

My ex had a similar issue but she was OCD about being clean, she was advised to only shower once a day and use vagisil. You do know showers are cleaner than baths right? And far healthier? There is this myth about baths that they are somehow amazing for your health, while they are very relaxing, medical research suggest that bathing in a warm soup of harsh chemical soaps, dirt, dead skin, faecal matter, mucus and urine isn't exactly the best way to get clean and unless you actually rinse yourself off before you get out you're only rubbing those bits of pee, poop and soap and stuff back onto you when drying with the towel.

If you want to be clean; shower, if you just want relax in your own cocktail of perfumed filth have bath.

I love baths but I only have them only as a means of relaxation once or twice a month.

OP try not to be too hygienic, twice a day may be overkill.

Your best bet though is to go see a doctor and get their advice.

katiekate agony auntYes, get it checked out. If nothing is wrong, I sometimes sprinkle a little baby powder down there in the morning just to help with the moistness. And if you don't shave or wax, hair retains odor, so go bare! I know douche is bad, but I use it once every few months just to keep things nice and fresh. And eat a good, healthy diet. I hear fruits and veggies help with the odor for both men and women.

A female reader, person12345 United States +, writes (2 July 2012):

person12345 agony auntThe itchiness plus the fish smell means you probably either have an infection or are irritated. Try an unscented liquid soap, stop using bubblebath and see if that helps. Also wear cotton (not thong) underwear. If it doesn't within a week or so, go to a doctor to check for infections.

So_Very_Confused agony auntah stop with the bubble baths first of all they are very bad for your "area"

If you are itchy it could be from the bubble bath...

have you been to the gyn and been cultured? you could have a bacteria called vaginosis that leads to smell

itch and smell could be yeast.

best thing to do is to see a doctor, get cultured and find out once and for all.
