You could most certainly be pregnant, you must take the morning-after pill within 72 hours. But, you should take it ASAP as its less effective as time passes and, I imagine, after 72 hours it is not very effective at all.

It's been 5 weeks now so a pregnancy test should be able to give you a true answer. Make sure you follow the instructions in the box properly, I also agree with Stina's advice and her URL pointing to pregnancy signs. By 5 weeks most girls know if they are pregnant or not, but having said that, some have said they have gone full term (believe it or not) without even realising they are pregnant.

I hope things work out for the best. If it turns out you are not pregnant, I would recommend you visit a sexual health clinic and talk through the various types of contraception and ask them the lowdown on the morning after pill, just to make sure this worrying situation doesn't happen for you again. All the best.

willywombat agony auntEmergency contraceptive effectiveness reduces the further away from the time of having sex you take it. It is not reccommended you take it more than 72 hours after sex fro medical reasons.

Do a pregnancy test.

ussually the morning after pill is only affective for upto 48 hrs after.

But that was the last time I took it, things may have changed. The best thing to do is take a pregnancy test, you should be able to get an accurate reading as its been over four weeks since your last period.

Okay good luck whatever happens.

sexseahot agony auntYou may or may not be pregnant. When taking the morning after pill, it takes about 6-8 weeks for your periods to be normal again. Still take a pregnancy test to make sure though. But if it comes up negative, wait a couple more weeks before you get too worried.

Good Luck!!! Hope this helps!

Wendyg agony auntHi,

As Stina as already said you will need to take a pregnancy test to be sure and consult a doctor with the outcome either way.

The thing that could be happening now is mind over matter making things feel a whole lot worse... I had a pregnancy scare a little while ago.. okay not so much of a scare but thought I was pregnant. Because i thought I was pregnant, (didn’t do a test) i was convinced that i was more hungry, convinved my breasts were tender, convinced I had flutterings in my tummy and so on... I know you have had the unprotected sex event first off and then taken the morning after pill late, so this could point more to that, but it could be all those factors making you feel insecure and worried and making it feel worse, im not saying its a walk in the park and your not feeling all these things, but when we dont know about something we fear the worst, I mind goes over board and can sometimes convince us of something.. Also the morning after pill can make your periods go all funny, and interfere with the normal pattern until your body has calmed down... so it could be that..

Try not to worry and take a test as soon as possible…. Hopefully it will be the result you want and you can relax and take it easy and the pains and everything else will subside… if you do the test and it says negative and you are still feeling unwell consult your doctor and they can give you the once over… I cannot say for sure if you could be pregnant, but it’s a higher odds than usual, but equally the morning after pill is pretty effective despite having taken it late… so please do a test and know for sure and consult a doctor if you are unduly worried about anything else.

Hope all works out well for you.

Take care x x

stina agony auntHi Samie,

In order to be sure, you should get a pregnancy test at your local drug store. If the test comes up negative, you should maybe talk to your doctor about the symptoms you have to find out what is going on, because it seems as though something isn't quite right (unless you're just pms-ing). If it's positive, you need to make an appointment with your doctor to discuss your options and figure out what steps should be taken.

Here is a really good website with lots of info on pregnancy symptoms (and anything else pregnancy related):

Nikita agony auntHi Samie,

The only way your're going to know for sure is if you take a pregnancy test. The morning after pill is most effective when taken within 72 hours after unprotected sex so the fact that you were outside that limit is a risk. The symptoms you are getting could be down to your period being late because of the pill. It can delay periods and worry could be a factor in the lateness too but I would definitely go for a test, either buy one from the chemist or even better, pop along and see your doctor. Good luck.

Go along and tell all of this to your GP. He will advise you on what to do next. If you are pregnant and you decide on an abortion then the sooner the better. If you are not then you have learned a life lesson. Always have protected sex, no matter what. Don't wait too late.

Take care
