Does Plan B work?

A female United States age 30-35, anonymous writes:

My boyfriend and I have been dating for about 3 months and having sex for 2. He sometimes asks me if he can just pull out but I've always been too afraid to risk it (because I'm not on any other type of birth control) so we always used a condom. However I know he really wanted to do it without one (and I was curious too because he's my first and I want to know the feeling) so I bought plan b and we had unprotected sex last weekend. We had sex twice (once saturday night and he pulled out), then I told him that I was planning on taking plan B and when we had sex again sunday morning he ejaculated inside me. I then took my pills the very same day. I'm a little worried because I was thinking he'd pull out the second time but he said if I'm taking plan B there's nothing to worry about... Is there still a chance I can get pregnant?

P.S. this was just a one time special thing, we're still planning on using condoms every time until I can get on a permanent form of bc!

A female reader, Tisha-1 United States +, writes (30 July 2009):

Tisha-1 agony auntFrom the plannedparenthood.org website: "Plan B reduces the risk of pregnancy by 89 percent when started within 72 hours after unprotected intercourse." So yes, it does work most of the time. But there's that pesky 11%, or one in ten, it doesn't work for. There's a reason it's called emergency contraception, it's not meant for routine birth control.

I have to ask you and him this question: is the sensation without the condom worth the amount of stress you're going through, and are you prepared to become pregnant? If you answer "yes" to both of those, then, by all means, carry on. If, however, the answer is "no", well, what are you thinking?

The problem people get themselves into is that they make poor choices when they haven't thought things all the way through. And passionate sex takes blood away from the brain, and throws out common sense.

If you're going to be sexually active, you owe it to yourself to become educated on the chances of pregnancy, the risks of STIs (yes, I know you're in a committed relationship, but that doesn't mean you don't need to be aware of them) and your own reproductive health. The choices you make now as a young woman will influence your life for decades.

Here are some web resources for you:

If you have the information, you can make better choices about your body and your health.

Good luck!

Honeypie agony auntPlan B doesn't work as birth control, not would it prevent any STD's.. It's not a smart thing to do.

Sperm can live up to 6-7 DAYS inside a woman's body - even if he "thought" he pulled out in time, you can definitely STILL get pregnant.

Get yourself on birth control, but continue to use condoms. Better safe then sorry.

A female reader, bobbles32 Canada +, writes (30 July 2009):

bobbles32 agony auntThere is still a chance because Plan B doesn't work 100% of the time, it's intended to be an emergency form of birth control, and it was not intended to be used as you used it. if it does work, you should start your period soon.
