Do other women not wear panties under their dresses?

A female United States age 26-29, anonymous writes:

My boyfriend gave me a gift card to luluelemon and said to buy something we would both enjoy. I ended up with a tennis style dress that fits perfect on me, but it is supershort. He told me it looks amazing on me but I'm a little selfconscious with this dress, and I might wear a thong underneath, usually I don't wear any panties under my dresses as I hate the pantylines. Do any other women enjoy the openair feeling under their dresses?

If my man gave me a voucher to buy something we would both enjoy, i would have bought something like massage oils and edible knickers and let him do all the work, then the no knicker scenario could be for his eyes only.

When i was 17 i remember dressing in a striking emerald green mini dress, and my dad said as i walked out of the door that it was way too short. He shouted to me

'Men always prefer using their 'imagination',so I grabbed a felt tip pen and said ' night papa'.

Imagination, you are a lady of mystery why flash it in everyone's face, so uncool and OLD NEWS.

I have seen this before at the clubs, girls purposely bending over to adjust their shoes or whatever and you could see their bare coochie. It just attracts attention and ususally they go home with a guy and he probably gets his way with her.

From a Male point of view, I think there is something about women who wear no underwear in public combined with a short dress that's a real turn off.

It comes across as tacky and an obvious form of attention seeking. If I and other random strangers can see a womans genitals it makes me feel like her body is available to all. No thanks.

Personally I agree that if a skirt or dress is so short others can see your underwear that it is neither classy nor gives a good impression.

I would suggest that you do wear something, considering it's a short dress. But I definitely do understand your open air feeling, though I haven't personally ever done that. Partly because of hygiene and partly because my culture doesn't allow it.

As many have clearly pointed out though, it's really not the best idea to go without your underpants, and I personally think your bf is giving you a fantastic solution & looking out for you at the same time. It won't hurt to listen.

Good Luck ;)

Anonymous 123 agony auntI cant imagine not wearing a panty no matter what I'm wearing! I cant imagine how some people go without them but then I guess that's just me. I don't think I've ever not worn underpants!

Since you asked for our opinion, I'd say that if its too short then its probably not acceptable to be worn in public. Why have everyone look at your body? What if you cross your legs and sit and everyone can see what's inside? There are seamless panties available these days and if you wear them, they dont show any panty lines. Why don't you try one of those?

I sometimes go "sans underpants" to avoid VPL but ONLY if I'm wearing a tight and LONG dress/skirt and there's absolutely no risk of it blowing or riding up or it's winter and I can wear opaque tights (pantyhose)instead - and that's not particularly hygienic to do regularly because of the risk of yeast infections.

I refuse to let random guys snatch glimpses of my pudenda (pun intended)! It looks slovenly and gives men the wrong impression.

A female reader, celtic_tiger United Kingdom +, writes (10 August 2015):

celtic_tiger agony auntPersonally, I think not wearing pants is a pretty trashy thing to do. It shows an availability, which I personally am just not comfortable with. But that is just me.

Apart from the hygiene issues..... no pants under a short dress really says you don't mind every tom, dick or harry looking at your private parts. Personally, if a dress is short enough to see pants, then its too short to be decent. But that is MY opinion.

There are also men who would assume, on seeing you are not wearing pants that they could take liberties. I wouldn't like a man to try and put his hand up my skirt. If you bent over in the dress, I am sure everyone would get a complete eyeful!

Are you really that worried about pantylines that you would consider putting yourself at risk?

Personally, I feel that you can dress with a level of modesty but still be sexy and classy. Leaving something to the imagination is far more exciting than having it all out on show.

mystiquek agony auntI'm old school I guess because to be perfectly frank I find going commando in a dress in public to be very trashy. It screams out "look at me, I'm a hoe"..I wouldn't do it. You could be quite embarrassed if a random gust of wind comes along, look at all the actresses that this has happened to. Its not cute or sexy in my opinion. Wear a sexy pair of panties or some short shorts or wear a longer dress. Be classy.

Honeypie agony auntNo, I think it can end up in a lot of trouble if you do this with short dresses, and I find it tacky.

Makes me think of the "Jersey Shore" girls *shudder* - I don't find it sexy, or freeing or whatever.

I think with a short dress a pair of REALLY nice pair of underwear is WAY more "sexy" - thong, lace boy-shorts.. whatever you like.. but short dresses needs a pair of panties. Unless you want to show your genitals to the world, the go ahead.

I get under a longer dress it can be comfortable, not one where your crotch might end up sticking out when you sit.

I'm all for going commando in jeans and pants - just don't find it .... appropriate in dresses.

But maybe that is just me.
