Why do you not lose weight whilst on your period?

I'm confused with this whole 'you can't loose weight whilst on your period'. I have started my period and typically it's started on the first day of my weight loss.

I'm eating very healthy and doing lots of exercise today onwards to get back on track after having eaten unhealthily because of all the birthdays and christmas lead ups. But I've just heard from my friend and researched into it, that apparently you don't lose weight whilst on your period or if you do it's not the same amount you would have if you weren't. My two friends said they actually gain weight when they are on their period. And thinking about it I can't understand why I wouldn't or why you gain weight?

Why do you not lose weight whilst on your period? And why do you gain weight, how long after the period is over does it take for that water weight to go?

I don't know if I should delay my health start till after my period, I don't want to eat really healthy and do all this exercise classes and the gym if it means I don't lose weight, or if I in fact gain it! Advice please would be great

You are talking about two different things. You can start a healthy way of life, it doesn't matter you are on your period or not.

If you are going to jump ona scale every day and looking for that weight loss then you are in trouble during your period. Your body retains lots of water during period, sometimes up to 5 lb.

Don't obsess about your weight loss. Eat healthy but eat, otherwise your body will start eating away your muscles, and that can cause weight loss, but it's really dangerous.

YouWish agony auntThink of what you're doing as a lifestyle change. I know you're doing it for weight loss, and that's good. But don't measure your only result with the scale, or you will get impatient. Eating right and exercise is a lifelong thing, not just until you hit your goal weight. Make changes you can live with for life. A healthy weight loss pace is a pound per week, with plateaus and fluctuations.

When you add exercise and weight training (I hope you ARE doing weight training!), it adds muscle which weighs more than fat. Measure your general sense of well-being, your clothes fitting, your BMI, your energy level, all of those. Starting a period has cramps and bloating for some, but don't take that as a sign that your efforts are NOT paying off!

To add to what has already been said, you also can read up on (google) what types of food reduce bloating/water weight during your period. Even though some foods are healthy they still can contribute to the bloating. If it really bothers you, then try to find foods that are both healthy and reduce bloating.

So_Very_Confused agony auntbecause your hormones cause water weight retention... it's why you feel bloated and your rings get tight...

just keep eating healthy and getting exercise and drinking water and don't worry about weight gain around your period... and worrying about how long after it will happen is useless as the only way to make this work is long term and permanent changes so the amount of time necessary does not matter.

you will get a period every month and even if you are at goal weight and eating well you will gain weight... it's a fact of woman life....

so if you delay the start of your diet (mine is on hold till January 7th btw) for the two weeks before your period and the week of your period that gives you one week a month to diet... you can't live like that.

make your healthy changes now and use them 85% of the time ALL THE TIME and you will be fine.

person12345 agony auntWeight loss and fat loss are two very different things. Most women gain weight on their period, but it has nothing to do with fat, it is water retention/bloating. Some women go up a whole pants size on their period, but it is temporary. Your period won't affect fat/calorie burning, but it can cause the scale to not budge. You should not stop your diet because you are bloated for a few days.
