I have known some pretty girls who purposely downplayed their smarts around guys as a habit. They were doing it to flatter guys egos, get guys to do favors for them, or just because they thought it was more attractive than acting intelligent and well read.

 It's actually true that people, especially young men in my experience, think pretty girls are dumb. I can't count how many "You're smarter than I thought" comments I have received, or raised eyebrows when they hear I have a masters degree from university. Or surprised that I have any opinion at all based in solid knowledge on the matter and not just what is written in gossip magazines....
Why do they think this? I have no idea. They aren't keeping up to date.

Blonds are stupid.
Jock are dumb brutes.
Nerds are awkward.
Goths are suicidal.
Specially in the US where kids "categorize" themselves and others throughout school. And they try and hang out with people who are like themselves or how they WANT to be seen.
If you look at movies (all the way from the 50's till maybe late '90) the pretty girls are dumb and "need" a man to take care of them.
I have 3 daughters (all doing AP classes) who aren't really fitting into these narrow categories. Because they ALL 3 don't give a flying duck how others WANT to see them, they just try and be themselves.
Be who you are, if people want to presume you are dumb because you are pretty, well THAT is on them, isn't it?
It's not like you can control how others think, feel, act or say.
All you CAN do, it control your own reactions.
You don't have to prove them wrong (or right) you just have to find it within yourself to NOT CARE that others want to categorize you.
As for why do people make fun of the smart ones? Because its EASIER to make fun of smart people than admit that they themselves are in fact NOT smart. In short, jealousy.
My advice? Be a person who build others up, not tear them down. Who knows maybe that attitude can become contagious :)
Be who you are and BE proud of yourself and your talents. And BE a good person no matter what.
