A female Australia age 36-40, anonymous writes:

This seems to be a growing trend especially with celebrities. E.g Alexander Skarsgard's dad having a second child, with his second wife. He is in his 60s. Even though he has adult children already. Why do people do this? Don't they want to enjoy their retirement? I mean they'll be 80 when their child is 20. Who wants that?

From a not-quite-sixty male: Ego and vanity. A guy in his 60's having child(ren) with a much younger woman has proven to the world he can still get it up and he's not shooting blanks.

A female reader, anonymous, writes (21 January 2012):

because they want a younger woman as a wife, and the younger woman tends to want children and doesn't have any yet so who else to do the job?

what i dont' understand is why the younger woman would go for an old guy - surely a younger hotter more virile man her age would be a better choice and a better father too for not being about to tip over from a heart attack anytime.

AuntyEm agony auntTypically they do not want the kids...they want the sex with a younger woman to boost their ego and keep them young. It's the women who want the babies.

You don't see that many men over 60 pushing strollers or changing nappies do you?

It's just one of those dark uncomfortable realities that has always existed so men can have what they want in a male dominated world...and the women are dumb enough to let them have it.

sarcy24 agony auntAnutyBimbim and the anonymouse female are right. The older men normally have money and the first wife with the grown up kids will be well divorced by now so they pick a new pretty young wife to appeal to their ego and as said the young wife will want kids so they do it all over again. Bear in mind most guys who do this are very wealthy so they won't being doing anything the endless nannies and au pairs will be doing the work so they will be enjoying their returement just fine.

A female reader, Aunty BimBim Australia +, writes (21 January 2012):

Aunty BimBim agony auntTo be honest I dont know who Alexander Skarsgard is, but I only know of one 'non celebrity' man who has young children and he would have been in his 60s when they were born. In that case it was because his first wife died, he married a much younger woman, and she wanted children.

My personal prejudices for older men who dump their wives for much younger women and then have second families lead me to have less understanding for them than I do for widowers .... I don't know why they do that, it could be seen as a slap in the face for their post menopausal first wives, do they feel it will keep them young, do the second wives see it as a way to cement their marriage, to bind the old blokes closer, or a way to ensure they are remembered 'kindly' in the wills?

A female reader, anonymous, writes (21 January 2012):

It's not that they want to father children this late in life its that older men want younger wifes and those wifes want children, so they have to give the women a child or it could be a deal brackee.
