This guy is the opposite of the type of man my parents want me to date!

Question - (4 July 2011) 1 Answers - (Newest, 4 July 2011)
A female United States age 30-35, *gg writes:

I'm 18, just finished my first year in college and during that year, I met this amazing guy that really cares for me. He's such a great person and the first person to be so introspective and concerned about me. I've met his dad and brother, but he has yet to even be mentioned to my parents or sister.

The thing is my family is a traditional Korean family. My parents are extremely conservative and protective. They expect any guy that I date to be this level headed, pre-med person that come from a successful and wealthy background. This guy on the other hand is the opposite of everything they want.

His parents are divorced, his dad is a cardiologist but doesn't spend his money wisely, he himself is 10 years older than me and is still an undergraduate. He has quite a record with school and a string of speeding tickets. He doesn't have a job and has very little in his bank account. Despite this, he really is such a nice and caring person and I would really love to introduce him to my parents in one way or another. But the fact that he is 28 and has divorced parents (his mom is a chain cheater by the way) is the problem. I do realize that I don't have to mention that his parents are divorced right away, but his age is not something I can't push aside.

CindyCares agony aunt Sorry, I am not Korean nor conservative, but I am a parent and I must say this has not to do with ethnicity or divorce but with plain common sense.

Of course your parents cannot be overjoyed, and you should not be either. It's like this guy comes in a package with the warning : handle with care.

At 28, unemployed and undergraduate? No money at all ? Without even the excuse of coming from an underprivileged background ? A record with schools, a string of speeding tickets ?

One can't help wondering exactly how he spent the last ten years during which he was supposed to accomplish something. Partying maybe ?

I'd skip the formal introduction for the moment . Well, to be honest, I'd skip dating him altogether : ) but I know this is an advice you can't follow. At least though make sure that your relationship gets more solid and secure, and that you see it somehat oriented in the future.

No point in giving palpitations to yoir parents if then it turns out it's just a short lived fling.
