A female South Africa age 30-35, *leu Jay writes:

I have just turned 18 and have had this habit since I was 3 years old, though it only got to be a problem around the age of 7. Usually when sitting at a desk, on a sofa or lying in bed reading, I have a habit of crossing my legs and squeezing my thighs together in such a way that stimulates my vagina.

I have never actually been able to count how many times I do this in one day and have at times done it non-stop for 2-3 hours. From various google searches, I've discovered that I am not the only female to use this as a form of 'masturbation', but I am the only one who it seems to be a problem for!

The thing is, that whilst carrying out this routine act, I am unable to continue writing or concentrate fully on whatever I was doing at the time. Physically it can tire me out an sometimes leave me puffing from the energy put into squeezing my thighs together for such long periods of time and with such force.

In first school, teachers often complained that I wrote slowly and I dont think that any of them even imagined that this was the reason why. I rarely finished my work. I have learnt to control it more now but it is still a MAJOR problem, especially when studying.

I have tried countless times to stop it, and sometimes the 'cold turkey' approach works for a day at most. One thing I have discovered is that if I am working and encounter something that I find difficult, I immediately start to squeeze my thighs together. I am not sure if this means that it is comforting or that it helps me to relax...but it is the first thing that comes to mind when I am stressed or angry.

When studying, I often achieve much less than I could because I start to squeeze my thighs together which slows me down immensely then tires me out, making me want to stop studying altogether. I have never ever spoken to anyone about this...but right now I am studying for my final exams before university and i'm fed up.

I could actually say that this habit it inhibiting my life. I could be achieving so much more, if only it would just go away. I've been trying for 10 years to control it and I am just at a loss completely. Tears literally spring to my eyes as I write this, because it affects me so much...you can imagine especially with being in school everyday.

I always thought I had a problem with procrastination and never getting things finished until I realised that it was purely because of this habit. I'm not sure if anyone can help me, but I would appreciate ANY advice.

DoubleM agony auntIt sounds like this has become a form of escape for you. We all have some way to apply salve to the stress and difficulties in life. Some turn to drugs or alcohol (also a drug), hobbies, reading, movies, food, gambling, exercise or indeed, sex. Whatever provides comfort can also become excessive and inadvisable. I'm no psychiatrist, but I'm fairly sure that people turn to many other compulsive behaviors to deal with life's stresses. Some are good, some only mildly troublesome and some are distracting or highly destructive. In America, overindulgence in alcohol and eating are obvious. You do not mention whether you also engage in a sexual relationship with a partner, but you are apparently of age and perhaps real sex could supplant or ease your urges. Nevertheless, it would seem that your "habit" is compulsive and professional assistance may be advisable. Best wishes to you.

I think you should try to get profesional help. If it gets in the things you have to do then it would be best to find someone to help you stop or to control it better.
