Not a relationship question and i'm quite sure its probably been asked before but was just wondering what guys think of girls with tattoos, not the big sleeves and manish tattoos just dainty ones and ones that have meaning to the individual? Would you date them?

A male reader, CaptainObvious United States +, writes (21 December 2010):

CaptainObvious agony auntMy objection to certain tatoos has nothing to do with any moral stance.

I detest anyone who is a herd follower.

The tramps stamps are the most flagrant example of complete lack of originality.

Three of my daughters have tats.

One has a hideous tramp stamp that I detest.

Another has artwork that she designed herself, and which I don't care for - but at least it's original.

The third has artwork that is original - she searched long and hard for an artist who could replicate her drawings.

It's pretty extensive - shoulder to mid forearm - and while it doesn't encourage me to get body art done, it looks great on her.

Oh, and she doesn't hide her tats.

And she's a CPA.

But she has the presence and poise to carry it off.

Her tats seems as if they spontaneous sprung forth as an expression of her personality.

Very few people could carry it off as she has.

TimmD agony auntTo the anonymous replier below, the original poster was asking "Would you date them?". Like most things on here, judgements such as calling people "trash" are uncalled for and are NOT welcomed. You may not prefer someone with tattoos, and that's fine. But don't go insulting people just because you don't agree with it.

Just an update and a thank you to all those who answered. I do have tattoos and they all stand for something meaningful to me and have never had any complaints but a few of my friends have had comments from people. I understand that there are a few haters but everyones allowed to voice their opinion i do really despise big tattoos on women as they look very masculine but i was just curious as to see if there were more haters than lovers

A male reader, anonymous, writes (15 December 2010):

If it has true meaning behind it and isn't too striking, then I would date them. But if it's a sleeve, or tramp stamp, I'd leave her at the curb with the rest of the trash.

A female reader, smiliek Australia +, writes (15 December 2010):

smiliek agony auntI have quite a large tattoo on my upper thigh. Cannot be seen unless i take shorts up, or down, so its still discreet. My hubby loves it. He knows the story behind it and the reasons for my getting it. My workmate who's in his 40's, hates tattoos on anyone. So it really does depend on the individual

I think you have to take into account where you come from as well. In the US its still a lot more taboo and people lump you into categories a lot more than in the UK - here's it's pretty normal and so long as it shows off your personality and YOU like it, I think the right guy for you will like it as well. Good luck! xx

A male reader, kenny United Kingdom + , writes (14 December 2010):

kenny agony auntI would be abit turned off if she was covered in tats, like all down the arms, but a few small dainty ones here and there would be fine.

As a few have said who woulden't date Angelina Jolie. I believe in the early day's she had Billy Bob Thornton on her arm, then had to get it lazered off when they split up, a classic example of not to get someone's name tattoed on yourself.

dirtball agony auntI like a girl with tattoos. They can be really hot. I prefer ones that can be covered, but don't really care that much either.

A male reader, C. Grant Canada +, writes (14 December 2010):

C. Grant agony auntI'd turn down Angelina for sure. She does nothing for me.

I'll just raise my hand here and confess to living in the 18th century. I detest body art.

A male reader, TimmD United States +, writes (14 December 2010):

TimmD agony auntSmall, easily hidden tattoos are harmless in my opinion. Generally, the bigger the tattoo and the location of the tattoo reflect the person's personality. I've known many people, both male and female who have tattoos and you'd never know it unless you asked.

I'm not disputing Odd's experience with the girls from his past. I just believe a girl can be perfectly normal, including her past, and still have a small tattoo. I will, however, agree with Odd's about men who are more traditional or men who are old fashioned may have issues with any tattoo... big or small.

A female reader, largentsgirl89 United States +, writes (14 December 2010):

largentsgirl89 agony auntYou know, I think it depends on the guy and what the tattoo is of. I'm sure your current bf wouldn't want to look at a tattoo on you like say, your ex bf's name.

If it were a tattoo to document something or a tat that tells a story I'm sure the guy won't care. Unless he lives in the 18th century. Some guys like girls with a lot of tattoos and other guys don't like girls with a butterfly tattoo.

Really depends on the individual guy.

TheFallBackGurl agony aunti find girls with tattoos very attractive most of the girls who get a tatoo get them for a reason theres usually a story behind the tattoo and i love discovering what that story is but then there are girls who get them because they think theyre cool it depends on the girl to tell u the truth

A male reader, Odds United States +, writes (14 December 2010):

Odds agony auntEvery girl I've ever known with a tattoo, even "dainty" or "individualistic" ones, had either issues or an unsavory past. Easy marks for players, too. For the record, I think the same of guys with tattoos as well.

Not saying having those tattoos makes you automatically unsavory, but many nicer, more traditional guys will lump you into that category. If that's what you're looking for, avoid tattoos. You could probably get away with it for a more "modern" guy, but they may not be what you're into.

A reader, anonymous, writes (14 December 2010):

It depends on the guy i guess. If they aren't huge or manish, like you say then i doubt most guys would be bothered.
