A male United States age 30-35, anonymous writes:

My girlfriend is on birth control. She says that she started at age fourteen because of abnormally bad periods, not to have sex. She started dating her first boyfriend then, which lasted 6 months. Is it a coincidence? Or is she lying to me?

I really do appreciate everybodies' honest answers. I do care about her very much. Its just that agonizing feeling that I am living to deal with. It is one of my flaws, and I do want to get it over with.

TasteofIndia agony auntHey sweetness,

The pill can and sometimes is used by girls to regulate their periods. I know a few girls who went on it when they were younger (around 14) to help out...

However, even if she was having sex with her boyfriend, should it really be that bad? That is a pretty personal thing... maybe it was a bad experience, maybe she regrets it, or maybe she's just a little ashamed. Personally, I would give her the benefit of the doubt. Lots of girls use the pill to help abnormal periods, and fourteen is an age where boyfriends come and go from girl's lives.

Enjoy your relationship and just believe your girlfriend. Don't ruin a good thing!!

It's probably just a coincidence although i wouldn't know whether this is correct or not. Some girls do get put on the pill because of bad periods.

A female reader, DrPsych United Kingdom +, writes (7 April 2007):

DrPsych agony auntIt is true that doctors prescribe contraceptive pills for period pains and heavy periods, although it is increasingly common medical practice to check girls out for hormonal/ physical problems that may be the cause of the problem. Depending on where she lives, she would have required parental consent to take the medication. I cannot tell you if she lied or not, but you should ask yourself why you don't trust her? It sounds like she has been honest about her dating history to you. Even if she was taking the pill at 14 to have sex you have to realise that is a reasonably responsible action for such a tender age. There is a girl of 14 posting on this board at the moment who is now pregnant because she wasn't wise enough to take precautions.

Why should it matter. If shes not telling the truth it is because shes embarrased about having sex so young. That should prove she has morals. The fact is that, that was then this is now. Grow up man and enjoy your relationship.
