Hi I'm 17 and 18 within the next week and I'm having girl problems. The main problem really though is lack of girls. The reason for this is because I'm reasonably short for a guy at 5'4". This is the past has made girls not interested and not given me the confidence with girls. This is reason why I am still a virgin and even though I am very very ashamed to admit it, not even kissed a girl. I hope you can help me with this because I think about this a lot and just want to get the things with a girl out of the way so then my friends at school can't find out and laugh at me about it.

Ive got no problem with saying that im handsome, i have an awesome physique and im very intelligent.. but im short, just shy of 5'6... i try to make up for my height by improving on other aspects of my person. BUT still i feel depressed, inferior, worthless because of my height All my friends are tall and they attract so many women.

Im 21 now and have decided to go for height increase surgery next year, increasing my height up to almost 5'8 at a cost of 15 K dollars.

A male reader, anonymous, writes (16 August 2007):

I'm 6-foot tall. Yeah, I'd say that height matters a lot. More than girls usually want to admit to, that's for sure.

Girls will always insist that all kinds of things "don't matter" when it comes to guys, but those same girls always "happen" to go for guys who always "happen" to have those things, don't they?

You gotta understand what the height issue is and what it isn't. Believe it or not, it's really not a complete deal-breaker by itself for a lot of girls. But what the height issue will do is stack the deck against you. It will heavily govern how readily the girls give you a second look and/or take you seriously right off the bat. (And when they're mentally writing you off the hottie-in-the-room list because of your looks, then they won't give you the chance to show off anything else in your favor, will they?)

There's never any good solution for these kinds of problems. The best thing you can do is BE A PRESENCE. Don't disappear into the background, be at least sorta assertive when it's called for, etc.

But a lot of shorter guys tend to do a knee-jerk compensation for their height issues and become a total showoff or a total clown. It's better if you don't do either one of these things. Even though you might feel like you're getting more attention and stuff by being a clown or a showoff, you're not necessarily getting any closer to getting laid. It's almost impossible to be funny and sexy at the same time. Girls like both, but if you're too much of one then you can't do the other. And smartasses/showoffs do get laid - when they were already pretty desirable guys to begin with. But just watch: The same girls will brush off the exact same behavior as "annoying" when it's coming from a guy who isn't as sexy to begin with.

So BE SOMEONE THEY REMEMBER, but keep the clown and showoff/smartass stuff within bounds. That's the best thing I could tell you to do.

A male reader, anonymous, writes (21 November 2005):

I'm a short guy at 5'6" and I've never had a date either. This is the way it is. Women like taller guys. They often require that a guy be at least 5'10" (or possibly as low as 5'8" if the woman "doesn't care about height"). It's just a preference and there's nothing you can do about it. High school can be tough as you've mentioned and college is just the same. Don't expect to get anywhere with women in college either. After college is usually the same story. Once you start making good money and can show women that you're successful, then they'll start talking to you. That's how it works.

Trust me on this one it doesn't matter how tall you are there are many guys who are short for there age e.g Joey Jordison is 30 and he's 5'5" and girls love him your only 18 so you still have time to grow. Girls love shorter guys sometimes and it's better than standing on your toes to see your boyfriend.

Bev Conolly agony auntBeing on the shorter side of average is no barrier to getting girls! Not if you're friendly and happy and good company. Girls want to be around guys who make them feel special and attractive and who can make them laugh. Honestly, although it feels like a major problem to you, most girls will not worry about your height.

I know that kids in high school can be terribly mean and unfair, but if you're not already, you'll be out of school soon and the Real World is a different place. Outside of school, it's about personality, not your height, or your clothes, or what music you like.

So be the most pleasant person you can be. Get out there and smile. Ask girls out -- and when you do, remember that guys of ALL heights get knocked back most of the time. Unfortunately, it goes with the territory. Don't take it personally, and keep trying.

A lot of girls will find you endearing and cute, and from there it's up to you to parlay "cute as a button" into "hot stud". I'm sure you can do that as well as any man of your age.

Work on that self esteem. Then put your shoulders, back, put a smile on your face, and ask one of those girls out. Most girls love short men, as they are both a date, and someone that they can " mother ". Short men are not intimidating, so women seem to feel more comfortable dating them, than tall men. Take advantage of your size.
