I got a uninary tract infection after having sex...is this common for women?

A female Canada, anonymous writes:

When I first had sex with my boyfriend, I didn't know it is a good idea to pee after intercourse (even using condom). Therefore, I had urinary track infection. The doctor gave me some antibotics and suggest me to drink cranberry juice. Therefore, whenever I have sex now, I will pee afterward. I sometimes think it's very unattractive to rush to the washroom instead of hugging my boyfriend. There are times when I didn't do that, and I had a mild version of the infection. I just keep drinking water to get better. I was wondering if I'm the unlucky one or all women have the same situation? I'm lucky my boyfriend is very understanding, but it's still pretty weird for him to hear about.

A female reader, birdynumnums Canada +, writes (15 April 2007):

birdynumnums agony auntThe usual name for it is "Honeymoon Cystitis". It is very painful and needs to be treated by your Doctor. If it doesn't go away by drinking cranberry juice, you need a dose of antibiotics to get rid of it competely. The complications can include getting a kidney infection (worst case senario) so go see your Doctor. It is a common infection and most women get it at least once, especially those that have just become sexually active, or those who have changed partners. You are introducing new and different bacteria into a moist region. The best way to avoid getting this is to pee immediately after sex, evertime you have sex. I hope this helped and I really feel for you, it's really painful. Please see your Doctor right away. One doctor told me that wet bathing suits and beach vacations were a bad formula for people who are prone to getting csytitis, so he always gave me a round of antibiotics before I travelled (keep it in mind, it's not fun getting this in a foreign country). Take care.

Royofthe Rovers agony auntMy ex had a similiar problem. I can recommend those little yogurt drinks like activ8 and the like. These tended to work and helped build up some kind of resistance.

Midge agony auntI wouldnt say its unheard of. Not all woman have this problem, but its not totally uncommon for it to happen.

Try taking Cranberry tablets on a regular daily basis. They are good for the urinary system and should stop or reduce the number of infections you have. I take one every day!

A female reader, peppersalt United Kingdom +, writes (15 April 2007):

Aww I feel for you hun. Since having a particularly bad UTI about 8 years ago I'm now prone to them, I've had bouts of it over the past 4 years recently, lasting between 2 hours and 3 weeks at a time. The pain is the worst I've ever felt, it's kept me off school, working, from going out... my bf and I went without sex for a month recently when I got it again!

Unfortunately some of us are just more prone to it than others. You don't really have to rush immediately to the bathroom, waiting a few minutes isn't going to cause any more harm than going straight away. How about cuddling, going for a wee, then coming back and cuddling more? It's inconvenient but trust me, less inconvenient than suffering from it all the time and being in pain/unable to have sex or go out. It's worth looking after that area and making sure you get rid of as much bactera as possible.

I haven't found any good treatments for it personally, just had to wait it out. Try to drink at least 4 litres of water a day to flush it out, and make sure you get good quality cranberry juice (not a cranberry juice 'drink' which usually contains more sugar and water than juice). I found avoiding tight jeans helped, and alcohol and sex often made it worse.

And be glad your boyfriend is understanding, it makes things a whole lot easier!

Hope you get well soon.

A female reader, Pork Hock Canada +, writes (15 April 2007):

Don't worry this happens all the time to me. It usually means you've had intense sex. Sometimes I bleed or pee continually. You need to drink lemon cordial juice, you know the stuff you dilute. I'm from the UK and they call it Lemon Cordial. Drink tons of it. Keep yourself clean, take lots of baths and drink loads of cranberry, lemon cordial or water, I mean loads. It is awful and a pain in the backside but it usually means you have cystitis because of lots of sex. You can buy stuff from the pharmacy if it gets itchy but drink what I said and you'll be fine.
