Honeypie is right. You brought this on yourself by meaning mean with him. When someone does a professional job for you ask how much it will cost and arrange for them to do it if you are happy with the price. Don't assume that it will be free because it suits you and you know them, that is not at all nice, it is trying to take advantage of them. I am not surprised he ended it, good for him. He can do without all that rubbish.

kenny agony auntAll sounds a bit awkward and messy to me, maybe you should have got some other trades person to complete the work for you.

Ok whats done is done, i think maybe you should just pay him what you owe him and leave it at that. And next time use someone else for any subsequent DIY jobs that come up.

Honeypie agony auntIf you want a SERVICE done FOR FREE (or for a tip! WTF?) You ASK first if that is OK, you make an AGREEMENT first. You don't wait until the work is done and then say, OH, I'm not paying for the work you did, only for materials and a tip!

He did a job for you, you OWE him.

Pay him his money and leave him be.

If he had OFFERED to do it for free, then a tip would have been OK - but that is not mentioned in the post.

You took advantage of his skills.
