I can vouch for lexilou's advice - gently rubbing slices of raw cucumber onto sunburn will sooth it and help take away some of the pain (being a redhead with very pale skin I've spent more than enough time smelling like a cucumber salad, lol!). It's also A LOT cheaper than aloe vera plants, but I believe it's from the same "family" which is why it works.

You should really wait until the burn has gone down before getting your tattoo to ensure the best results, the least amount of pain and to reduce the chances of infection.

And for the future - high factor sun cream and a loose, light, long sleeved shirt are my suggestions. I've spent a lot of time camping and partying and they are essentials for anyone who burns easily.

Dont get the tattoo right now. Wait until your skin heals. In fact I dont think the artist will do it because you are at a high risk of infection. Use aloe vera. I had a sun burn so bad on my back that if i rolled onto it, it woke me up from a dead sleep the aloe healed me enough that I could sleep comfortably after 24 hours but you will still peal really bad.

lexilou agony auntCancel the tattoo a week or two wont matter and if you peel as a result of the sunburn it may mess your tat up. Plus the tattoo will hurt a hell of a lot more as well, my back one hurt more then my other one, especially on the boney areas.

Try honey or something cool on your skin like cucumber or advocado cut up. You can also get soothing gels with advocado. Aloe vera is good too and try ice. Take cool baths and drinks lots of water as you will be dehydrated too. And next time slap on the suncream. x

confusedinkent agony auntYeah I would recommend delaying the tattoo, its painful enough without the sunburn!. but seriously, the reason that tattoists wont do tattoos on a sunburn is because it will peel and take a thick layer of skin off!. its hardly worth it. and the sunburn will effect the way the tattoo heals too!. not good!.

The tattoo will still look as good a week later, promise. x

Good luck, just let nature take its course!.

birdynumnums agony auntOatmeal, baking powder and a pinch of salt in a luke-warm bath can be soothing and help with the pain, but I'm with all the other Aunties on delaying the ink work. Sorry, hope you feel better...

BigSis agony auntConnor is spot on here, with the live natural yoghurt, it's not only soothing and cooling but it also has natural healing qualities, though it wont heal you by Thursday.

He's also right about the tattoo, your skin is raw and will be for a few days, so you must cancel your appointment.

Take care and I Iope you don't suffer with it too much.

A reader, anonymous, writes (1 July 2008):

I would defo advise against the tattoo for now, as most tatooists would probably refuse to do it if you have really bad sunburn anyway as the skin is way to sensitive, so if you can, try and reschedule for a couple of weeks.

Aloe vera is really good for sunburn as it soothes the skin, also try and keep it really moisturised to prevent it from peeling. A good tip is to put your aftersun in the frige before using it....it feels so nice and is really cooling on the skin.

A male reader, WastedLife United States +, writes (1 July 2008):

Skip the tat for now - the skin is sore, red, and mostly INFLAMED. Get it later if you want. I'm no tattoo expert, but it would seem the ink will migrate and bleed from where it belongs, resulting in a poor result. There may well be medical counterindications too.

Of course, it will probably be MUCH more painful than a regular tat under these circumstances.

Fairly high dose vitamin C and vitamin E can help. I live at high elevation and the sun here is incredibly intense, and I take 2.5 grams of vitamin C and 1200 IU's of vitamin E per day. This is not medical advice and your results may vary. Good luck.

A female reader, O Connor Ireland +, writes (1 July 2008):

O Connor agony auntwell you probably will be advised by the tat artist not to get the tat until your skin fully heals - your skin is meant to be free from anything so sunburn is of course out of the question. as for how to get rid of it, a great way to soothe it and put moisture back into the skin, natural yoghurt is the only thing that has ever worked 100% for me at healing the skin as well as soothing and cooling the pain. i know it sounds weird but it works believe me - the bacteria in it also helps the burn.

but to be honest if your getting the tat on thursday i wouldnt get my hopes up too much as if the artist is in any way professional he will advise against doing a tattoo.
