person12345 agony auntI may be wrong on this, but I'm pretty sure most people with HPV do not show symptoms, and I don't think men ever show symptoms. If you were not his first, it's entirely possible that he picked it up before he met you and transmitted it. I wouldn't assume he cheated. You don't even have to have sex to get it, just skin on skin genital contact.

chigirl agony auntDidn't your doctor tell you, or didn't you ask your doctor this? HPV is a virus with no symptoms. Usually it is just there without anyone knowing, and is quite common. There are many versions of the HPV though, some cause cancer, some cause warts, and most do absolutely nothing other than prove that you have had sex at least once in your life.

A male reader, Kenj United Kingdom +, writes (27 September 2010):

Kenj agony auntIt is possible you have had the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) for years. There are hundreds of different strains, some cause warts some dont and have no symptoms and some strains can be linked to cervical cancer.

Your doctor will be able to give you a lot more information.

Has your boyfriend been tested for it?

There is no cure for it and it will generally go on its own. Its one of those viruses that there is still not enough known about to know for sure.

You can get vaccinated against it but its pretty useless doing this now, it only helps if you have not had it before and the injections are over a 6 month span.

Just listen to your doctor and follow his / her advise on this.

aunt honesty agony auntYes it is possible to have had this virus for 14 years and not no, there are no aparent signs that would have made you realise something was wrong so dont be worrying that he has cheated as am sure he probably more than likely hasnt.
