A female United States age 30-35, anonymous writes:

First of all, this isn't really a relationship question, but i do need help.

Anyway, I've recently started living with my dad, who isn't married, and doesn't have a girlfriend. He also has NO IDEA how to cook, so he always eats out at places like mcdonalds and wendy's and such.

He's getting very unhealthy, and it doesn't help that he chews and drinks a ton of soda. So my question is, where can i find some things that I can make for him by myself, that are healthy, and that a MAN would enjoy eating?

I love to cook, so things that take a while are fine. I'm just looking for some recipes mostly :)

I'm vegetarian, so some things that meat is optional would be great. Also, i'm only 16, so i can't really cook extremely well, but i do cook a lot. any help would be appreciated!

SirenaBlusera agony auntItalian and chinese dishes have lots of quick, easy vegetarian recipies

Ditto for Indian food!

Either one beats the hell out of McDonalds and Wendys. :)

I love Spanish food (and anything else Spanish); tortilla española (Spanish omelette) is a good idea. Let me see if I can find my recipe. I've read that Mediterranean food is healthy; and there must be some truth to that because I've never seen a fat Spanish person!

Miamine agony auntItalian and chinese dishes have lots of quick, easy vegetarian recipies... I taught me ex how to cook a stew, easiest thing for a man to learn, chop up veg, throw in a bottle of wine and some vegetable stock, some bread and a salad and dinner is done.

Chinese.. chop veg small, throw in wock (pan) with little oil, toss, toss, boil noodles, dinner done.

Men love kebabs, easy to prepare... chop veg, chop fruit small, stick on skewers (sticks) little honey or mustard, put in grill, turn, dinner done, serve with salad, chips or potatoes.

Best thing with these dishes, they are quick and easy and you just choose what's available and in season..

Look on the web for recipies.. Big Oven, BBC food, Food Channel, Recipies for All.

Fish is also good. Wrap in foil paper, put on salt, pepper and herbs, add veg cut up small, cook in oven, dinner done and no plates to wash up.

These are the simple recipies that I teach men who need to cook and stay healthy at the same time.

chigirl agony auntOne great thing to eat though, as a last suggestion: home made soups. They are also so easy to make.

A female reader, chigirl Norway +, writes (12 July 2010):

chigirl agony auntThere are tons of recipes to be bought at bookstores, or be found online. Read up on what are healthy ingredients and take it from there. Everything you need can be found at any larger grocery store. Maybe you could politely point out to your father that he needs to pay attention to what he eats, if you have a good enough relationship with him.

For most part, stay away from sauces and anything processed! Make things from scratch as much as possible. Also remember that your fathers diet needs to be different from yours, as you are a young woman and he an adult male. He probably should eat less fat and sugar than you can get away with. People also need different diets depending on their health condition. If your father is overweight he should stay away from fried food and food that contains a lot of fat. Red meats are also tricky, and there are certain vegetables he should stay away from.

Really though, there is too much to go into here. I worked at the kitchen of a hospital so I know a lot about diets, but you will also be able to find this information online, or even in books at the library. Stay away from book sections about dieting for loosing weight. That is not what you need. You need something about healthy cooking. I hope I gave you some ideas on where to start and what to look out for.

In general, going by the description you gave of your dad, bad foods: fat, sugar, processed, wheat, fried, cream

Good foods: fiber, breakfast, boiled, raw, fish, water with every meal, eggs

A female reader, DrPsych United Kingdom +, writes (12 July 2010):

DrPsych agony auntYou learn to cook through practice and 16 is a good age to start. It is a good life skill to have and you have a willing subject in your Dad. I am a veggie while the rest of my family are not - it is easily sorted out by preparing meat dishes separately from the rest of the meal. If you google recipes then you will find lots of websites presenting simple dishes. I would say that you should master the simple stuff before you start doing banquets. It is not about cooking for men, individuals have different tastes. Ask your father what he likes to eat and take it from there. Tell him you are worried about his diet and would prefer not to live on junk food. If he lets you take care for cooking for a while he may feel better and see the difference. It is cheaper to cook at home than going out for dinner all the time.
