 I'd say it can be normal for some men some of the time, particularly if his orgasm was very intense, it's sort of an autonomic response (not voluntary) to extreme pleasure or joy.

I don't know how commonplace it is - guys DEFINITELY don't talk about it. I cried when I gave my virginity to my wife. It was a very complicated mix of physical and emotional intensity. Perhaps he is an emotional type, and experienced ejaculation as deeply spiritual in some way.
Perhaps he was having some sad thoughts right then at that moment, for some reason.
If it was me, I would talk about it with him - but outside of the bedroom. Just ask why did he get upset, and don't criticise him or make fun of him. Just be respectful. At least then he will probably tell you, so you won't go wondering if he's going to do it every time.
