A female reader, Bev Conolly Australia +, writes (22 May 2006):

Bev Conolly agony auntHi anon,

I'm an older woman (44), and have never worn make-up... not even at my own (two) weddings! I just can't see the point.

I dislike it for all the same reasons that you do, and more: it's not what I really look like, it's a lot of trouble to apply and re-apply, it's astonishingly expensive to buy and once people see you looking a certain way, you're pretty much stuck with putting it on forever!

In spite of my being rather ordinary looking, I've always found that men have been attracted to me, and had good friendships with the guys I've been involved with. Furthermore, I can scratch my eyelid or rest my cheek in my hand without getting muck all over me! :)

Let's do a quick "historical" recap of the use of makeup. It started out as a way for ageing women to recapture a bit of their lost looks (reddening lips, hiding lines, emphasising eyes etc). Then, younger women wanted to use it to hide any trace of age. Eventually it reached the point of teenage girls using it, so they could look like OLD women who are trying to look young!

But why not just look your age? Especially at 15? That's what older women were trying to do in the first place!

So, I can't speak for any boys, although I suspect that some would say it looks good sometimes, even if it's a bit of a hassle to put on. And for some women, I imagine that it's useful when they want to look a certain way for a certain event. But if you don't like it, don't use it. There's much to be said for the Natural Look, particularly when it's all you!

Don't be dragged along by fashions. Make your own. :)

Hi, I think it's something that you really shouldn't concern yourself with. Best thing to do, is do whatever you feel comfortable with. I'm 30 (wow - that old!!)and seldom wear make-up - maybe if the occasion is special but as a general rule I don't and funnily enough most of the guys I've dated have all said that they dislike make-up! In fact, you will find a lot of guys out there who prefer the natural look than to one which is not. Really, if you don't want to wear make-up, don't worry. There are plenty of guys out there who will think extremely highly of you for following what you want to. Good luck!

willywombat agony auntEach individual has different tastes and nobody on here can speak for each and every one of them. It is unfortunate but some guys get off on make up, some couldn't care less and some dislike it intensely. The point is do not cater for other people, if you wish to wear make-up you go for it and wear it for yourself! If you don't like it, the same thing applies, do it for you not some bloke.

joanna44 agony auntboys dont like girls that were make up,wearing a little bit to cover a spot or something is ok but painting it on looks stupid and no guy likes to be with one girl and wake up in the morning with someone that looks totally different.go for your normal look, no girl really needs make up, it just gives some girls confidence but theres other ways to find confidence trust me.

hello, im 17 and at my age everyone cares about looks and rubbish like that and i dont believe in it. i just recently got a gf and before we were going out i always seen in make up and she was pretty with the make up, i admit that but when we started going out i saw her with no make up and in my opinion she was beautiful because (i know this is stupid) i saw see her in a natural and i think its nicer and you see these women they same age of you wearing a factory of make up the only reason they wearing do it because they ugly and maybe its not physical uglyness but emotionally ugly and remember these women will be the pregnant around 16 and lose their life. just do what you want to do and don't get sucked in peer pressure or what T.V shows you and if boys dont like you cause you dont wear make up, well they are shallow people.

A female reader, bonym United Kingdom +, writes (22 May 2006):

bonym agony auntHello dear, well I am 23 and I dont wear makeup either. I am of the opinion what you see is what you get so if they dont fancy me without makeup, thats tough!!! If you are comfortable in your own skin, then do not feel obliged to wear makeup. To me, makeup is a mask and you have to take it off at the end of theday anyway. I believe that natural beauty is TRUE beauty. Its like for example when you see these film stars without makeup its like they appear ugly but that is only because we are used to seeing them with their masks on. But if we were to see them on tv everyday without the mask, then we would just get used to their true beauty. xXx

A male reader, lboy United Kingdom +, writes (22 May 2006):

lboy agony auntwell i'm 13 so i'm probably the best answer you'll get for this question. the way i see it is that it is the reason those other girls wear make up is because they have spots and things like that to cover up, where as you are probably perfect the way you are, so if the boys don't see that straight away then just give them some time and they'll come around, because you never know when love will find you.
