A female reader, sugar_sugar United States +, writes (17 July 2009):

sugar_sugar agony auntI use the word cute very frequently, guys always seem to think the worst.

"I'm ugly, but interesting?"

NO! I use it whenever someone looks, or does something particularly endearing to me. I use it on my boyfriend frequently whenever he does something particularly adorable.

Hot could be any random person, cute is probably going to be a particularly attractive person that I'm a little besotted with :P

It is a positive thing, and for me, is slightly more intimate, less sexually charged than most other words that are used in its place.

Basschick agony auntWell I haven't actually used that term since I was 20, but I think it's her way of flirting with you. Take it as a compliment.

A male reader, GrimmReality United States +, writes (17 July 2009):

GrimmReality agony auntIt means that she sees you as a possible charity shag for her ugly friend eating Hagen Daz in the corner and holding up the building with her hips.

It means you are cute, but not hot. which means she may sleep with you if you give her enough alcohol or drugs

(for it seems that people can justify either cheating on their mates, or having sex with ugly people if they have liquor in their bloodstream....don't believe me? you should read the posts around here that contain in the first paragraph "I was drunk". They end usually in "Help! What Am I Gonna Do?")

But that means you can have her and her hideous sidekick at the same time, and you can get away with it.

But don't tell anyone or everyone will find out that you slept only with the ghoul in the corner. And she's no prize. After all, why is she in the corner?

A female reader, anonymous, writes (17 July 2009):

a guy friend told me he didn't like it when girls called him cute as hhe thought it it wasn't a very manly quality to have.

however, it is a positive thing for a girl to think your cute. its an attractive quality! no its not sexy or masculine but its when you look innocent and fresh. Its equally as attractive!!! trust me!

A female reader, natnatxxx United Kingdom +, writes (17 July 2009):

natnatxxx agony auntIf she says it in a giggly flirty voice, shes means your good looking, aka attraction cute.

If she says it in a patrionising tone like she say to a little furry puppy or a baby, then she thinks your adorable just like a furry puppy or a baby.

The new modern speech, like using "hot" and "sexy" really helps this situation. x

A female reader, QuirkLady United States +, writes (17 July 2009):

QuirkLady agony auntIt means, "hey, you're cute." I suppose it could mean "hey, I want to take you home and lock you in the basement and make you father 10 children and make tiny hats for sale until your fingers bleed,", but I doubt it.

A male reader, Danielepew Mexico +, writes (16 July 2009):

Danielepew agony auntYep, we would need more information, but not only about the tone of voice but perhaps about the circumstances.

If you gave her flowers, took her out dining, dropped her at her door and tried to kiss her, but she gave you this line instead, then "Hey, You're cute", in real life it could mean that she didn't like the thing at all and you were pissing her off.

Men and women do not speak in the same way. Unless you realize that, you will always be confused and trying second readings of what they say. But the first rule is "never assume that they always mean exactly what they say".

A female reader, abikins United States +, writes (16 July 2009):

It all leads down to the same thing. What we are trying to say is "I think I'm attracted and I want to get to know you better." Sometimes there is more or less detail to what we are saying when its translated into what some people call "girl talk" but that is the basic meaning. I sugest that you talk o the girl (or girls) that have said that to you and see what they truely meant by it. Ask them to translate into "guy talk", like you would for a girl when she doesnt understand football.
