Even though we took all necessary precautions, I'm not feeling well, could I be pregnant?

A female United Kingdom age 30-35, anonymous writes:

I recently lost my virginity to my boyfriend (21st Dec) ... it was an a

amazing experience as we had waited for ages to show our love and commitment to each other. We of course took the necessary precautions before we made love to each other, we used Durex extra safe condoms, I was on Cirezette ( a progesterone only pill ) ( I still am), and we always check the condom afterwards by blowing it up and checking that it doesn't deflate.

When I first started the pill I had a bleed for the first week or so nothing major just a little bit just enough to be noticeable, and then I had another bleed at the end of the first packet. I am about a quarter way through my third packet now and I haven't bled since.

I am worried because lately as making love is a new thing to us we have slept together a lot.

I have had pretty bad period pains for the last week and I have had quite a bit of diarrhoea.

Do you think I have anything to worry about, I am just so scared I might be pregnant :/

Any help would be appreciated :)

A female reader, Miamine United Kingdom +, writes (2 January 2012):

Miamine agony auntYour not pregnant... you used enough contraception to frighten even the most bravest sperm. Lost Virginity, sex, Christmas, new year... lots of things happening, it all sounds like stress to me. The pill bleed sounds normal, a little blood at first and then your body gets used to it and no blood at all.

Damn.. why do you girls wait so long before you come and get help. For the next time, remember you can always get the "morning after pill" it is effective as long as it's taken 72hours after sex. In the UK, chemists, hospitals and the NHS, have tons of places open over the new year and Christmas where you can get contraception and the morning after pill...

Here is the number of NHS direct, nurses and doctors available 24/7 365days of the year. Tell them situation, and they will be able to advise you over the phone. Next time you have problems with your health or contraception, don't waste time on the internet, call them and speak to a professional who is paid to help you with any concerns you may have.

*NHS... http://www.nhs.uk/Pages/HomePage.aspx

Type in your postcode to find the location of your nearest family planning clinic. Contraception is available free, and emergency contraception (taken within 72 hours, but sooner is better, 24 hours is best) can help prevent pregnancy if you have unprotected sex.

NHS Direct Telephone Hotline - 0845 4647

Give the NHS a call, and don't worry, your not pregnant, your just stressed out by all the changes that have happened to you this month.

A female reader, Orbiter United Kingdom +, writes (2 January 2012):

It's very, very unlikely you are pregnant (virtually impossible seeing as the condom didn't break).

I'm on Cerazette too and had all the symptoms you described in your post. I was on the verge of going to the doctor about them but after about nearly 2 months on the pill the symptoms disappeared. Except for the occasional cramping like you get before a period.

If it will give you peace of mind have a test done but I seriously doubt you are pregnant.

WeShouldntHide2006 agony auntI can say pretty confidently that you aren't be pregnant.

HOwever, the more you worry about it the more you can focus on the symptoms you are describing.

Relax, take a deep breath and pat yourself on the back for being safe.

Take care.

A female reader, person12345 United States +, writes (1 January 2012):

person12345 agony auntI don't see how you could possibly be pregnant. Not only was no sperm present to fertilize an egg (since the condoms were intact and in place) but assuming you're among the 99.9% of people that the pill does not fail with, there would be no egg present to fertilize.

The diarrhea is most likely either from your period or the pill. Both can cause that as a side effect/symptoms, it's actually fairly common. Take some immodium and ibuprofen, take a hot bath, and try to relax.

A reader, anonymous, writes (1 January 2012):

It doesn't sound like you're pregnant, but you should take a test to make sure if you're worried. Even with multiple birth control methods women do become pregnant. Birth control pills are only effective if you take it properly which means every day at the same time and there are some things such as antibiotics which can cause it to be ineffective. Condoms do malfunction more frequently, but it doesn't sound like that was a problem here.

A female reader, natasia United Kingdom +, writes (1 January 2012):

natasia agony auntWhat you describe aren't the symptoms of pregnancy, and as you are being so careful (pill and condoms), you just can't be pregnant. The pill, by the way, stops you ovulating - so you just wouldn't be fertile at all. It makes you barren. There is no chance of pregnancy, usually.

I think you might have some kind of infection - or a bad reaction to the pill. I really really think you must see your doctor asap to see what this is. Stop worrying you are pregnant because you won't be - it will be something else. I don't think you should have bad period pains when you are on the pill. You must see the doctor.

Hope that helps.

A female reader, chigirl Norway +, writes (1 January 2012):

chigirl agony auntIt's not pregnancy. I don't know exactly what is causing the diarrhea, other than a stomach bug or something you ate. The period pains could be natural or induced by the pill.

None of that is pregnancy symptoms, not that you'd experience symptoms at this early stage anyway, and not that there really are any general symptoms other than morning sickness and not having your period, which not all people even experience.

If you are worried about pregnancies I suggest you take a pregnancy test every third or second month, so that in case you accidentally do fall pregnant you will know as early as possible. But there is NO way to know you are pregnant or not other than take the test or wait 9 months. That means if you are worried you are pregnant you need to take a pregnancy test.

But you're not pregnant, I can say as much, because you've used two forms of contraception in addition to testing the condoms afterwards which makes it darn impossible unless a divine force intervenes.
