A female United States age 30-35, anonymous writes:

About two months ago I had sex and the lips of my vagina swoll up really bad. It was unfortable and it burned to pee. I haven't had sex since then. Then a little while after that I woke up and one side was swolen (I think I might have been playing with myself I'm my sleep idk)

Yesterday I was playing with myself (I was like half asleep) and it swoll up again, idk if I like scratched myself or I was to rough or what. it wasn't as bad as the first time but it was still annoying.

So my question is, what do I do about this?

My friend has told me to go to a doctor but I'm only 17 so I would have to tell my mom. She knows about me having sex but that's just an awkward conversation I really don't want to have.

PLEASE, if you have had any experience In this let me know. I don't know what to do and I'm pretty scared, so please help.

So_Very_Confused agony auntAny woman who is having sex needs to be seen regularly by a GYN even if nothing is wrong.

Time to get yourself to a gyn at 17.

Tisha-1 agony auntYou might think that having sex is your step into being an adult but you know what? The real sign of being all grown up is to know when it's time to act like an adult....

This is an important moment for you... One that may set the tone for how you deal with challenges in the future.

Do you sit and search all sorts of sites that are probably filled with misinformation, falsehoods and possibly dangerous to your health type of advice? Or do you woman up, acknowledge that the situation needs medical expertise, a proper exam and real treatment?

If you make smart choices about your health now, you will save yourself a boatload of problems in the future.

Either go to plannedparenthood.org and find a local clinic that may help. Or be really really brave and tell your Mom you need to see a gynecologist. You can do it! Be brave!

To be on the SAFE side, I suggest you go see the doctor. IF it IS a STD/STI the SOONER you get it look at and treated the SOONER you will feel better.

SUCK IT UP and tell your mom you need a doctor's visit.

If you feel grown up enough to have sex, then you should be grown enough to tell your mom you need to see a doctor. Right?

CindyCares agony aunt It could be a vulvo-vaginitis . An infection, basically. You SHOULD see the doctor. It's nothing fatal, but, in case, you should take antibiotics and you need a prescription.

A reader, anonymous, writes (17 June 2014):

It could be a yeast infection or a uti or bacterial vaginosis. Since you had sex you need to get tested for stds. It could be a reaction to sex also but please go to a doctor. Yeast infections can cause swelling, nasty rashes and redness as well as a lot of pain if they're severe. You might want to get tested for diabetes as well if it is a yeast infection and it doesn't respond to treatment since high bg can cause chronic yeast infections.

Okay so I found out I was calling the part of my vagina that was swolen the wrong thing, it's actually the inner lips or the Labium minor. I looked up pictures of a yeast infection and it's defiantly not that. Any other suggestions? I'm thinking more about going to a doctor but I don't wanna go if it's something simple I shouldn't worry about.

A female reader, anonymous, writes (16 June 2014):

A yeast infection (or a bacterial infection) can cause the inner labia to swell up if it gets really bad and you keep scratching it (some people scratch in their sleep). It happened to me once as a teenager.

I told my mum and she took me to the doctor - yeast infections are common in women of all ages. Sure it wasn't the most free and easy conversation I've had with my mum but it was worth it.

In the UK you wouldn't need your parents permission to make a doctor's appointement at 17. I'm surprised that you need it in the US.

If it's one of your outer lips that's swollen up it's more likely to be a bacterial infection like an abscess or boil caused by a little cut or ingrowing hair - especially if you shave. Again, these are very common and you shouldn't be too embarrassed about telling your mum. These usually clear up well with a course of antibiotics.

But I do think that you need to make a Drs appointment so you should tell your mum.

Ciar agony auntGoogle yeast infection and see if the description resembles what you're experiencing.

If that's what it is, it is easily treated.
