Hey

I'm an English Girl looking into doing one of my university years abroad in the US. There are 2 parts to my question really:

1) I have been with my boyfriend for 2 years. we are in a fairly long-term comitted relationship, and this is the only thing holding me back from 'living my dream' and doing a year abroad. I'm totally torn. This would mean leaving him for a year. i think i'd come back over christmas, but its still a long time to be apart. I'v never been in a LDR before, is it possible to not see someone for a year and still stay together??!

2) I'm really quite nervous about moving to the USA. I dont know what college im going to apply for, or where abouts in the USA I want to go. I'v only ever lived in small english villages/ towns, so somewhere like NY or LA would be a bit too mind-blowing... do any american readers have any advice on more small-town places ('real america' rather than 'tourist's america') with good colleges? I need to do alot more research but a few starting points would be great :)

P.s... I am currently 18 and will be 19/20 when I go. this will be a culture shock mostly because of the drinking thing haha! I have been a social drinker for like, 2 years now... is it possible/ realistic that 'underage' people drink in the usa? I know we do here... haha. (I know you dont need alcohol to have a good time, but it will be a bit weird reverting back to being treated like a child after a year or so of freedom!!)

Thankyou :)

xxx Lucy x

I got to salisbury university here in maryland. Its a great school and is in a small city type area. Its not small but it certainy isnt big. Its 20 minutes away from ocean city where the beach is and a few hours from new york city. Look it up I think u will love it. As for ur bf, love conquers all . ESPECIALLY distance. Make sure tht u r ready or in love with him first tho because a new environment and a new college will bring many new temptations . Good luck!

shrodingerscat agony auntMy girlfriend is English and she is planning on moving here permanently after she graduates. She's also in Uni (over here we usually call in college :-P) It might take a few hours for me to get a message from her, but I will email her and ask her what she's doing to prepare moving to the States.

I'll return as soon as I can to let you know what she's doing to get herself ready to cross the pond.

So_Very_Confused agony auntHoneypie forgot to add MD (maryland) to the mix it's not huge, has some good schools, is centrally located (3 hours by car to NYC and an hour from DC the nation's capital) and you can live in a suburb of the city so it's not so busy...

drinking: legal age is 21 cut and dried. when I was 18 the legal age was 18 (a small window in the US when it happened)... so I can't tell you that 18-21 will drink illegally since it was legal when I was that age... I'm sure you will have access to beer at the least... you will have to drink in private at private parties however and you will not be able to buy the beer or alcohol. Also depending on where you live will depend on how someone over 21 can acceess it. For example in Maryland you buy beer and wine and liquor at one store... in PA Beer is at the state store and liquor and wine at a different store and in North Carolina you get beer and wine at the grocery store... it's different for every state.

as for the LDR... ONE YEAR in the lifetime of a relationship is a very short period of time and although it feels really long... it will not be.

Honeypie agony auntI'm from Europe living in the US and it is a cultureshock, but not "that" big, maybe because I have lived in several European coutries as well. When I was 18, I took a year off before starting Uni and worked/lived in London it was a blast. When I was 24 I spend a year in Germany and had just a good time there.

I think it's a GREAT opportunity to see some of the world, and honestly at your age it's going to be somewhat of an adventure.

There are MANY good universities/colleges in the US. You just have to pick a state... lol WA,OR,MI,NH,VT,PA,MA are some of the states that have "similar" weather for instance. Unless you want to see something totally different. Talk to your guidance counselor about the choices you have.

As for the LDR, I think if it is something you both really really want you can make it work. There are no guaranties, but there are no guaranties that you will stay together if you don't go.

Drinking.. Not sure. I think it really depends on the place you go. But honestly, I ahve no doubt that you can hav fun without the alcohol if need be.
