Question - (3 July 2009) 4 Answers - (Newest, 4 July 2009)
A female United Kingdom age 30-35, anonymous writes:

I hate living with my family and they dislike living with me, because I don't contribute to anything in the house and just sit in my bedroom or go out, I've been wanting to move out for over a year now but only ever played with the idea, my Dad has now turned round to me and suggested that I do move out and my Mum has agreed that would be best for everyone.

Having just completed my first year at college I'm planning to return to finish my A-Levels and am desperately trying to find full time work for over the summer.

Once I've managed to secure a solid income, how do I go about finding somewhere to live?

My friend has suggested that she is unhappy with her family too and would be more than willing to find somewhere to stay together so that we can split bills.

BUT I HAVEN'T GOT A CLUE WHERE TO START!!!!!

Go to your local council office and ask for a housing application form, fill it in and hand it back to where it came from.

If you're under 18 or in full time education you can get council tax exemption... but you still have to pay bills for electricity, gas, water and sewage, telephone, TV licence and broadband. Not to mention food and other misc like cosmetics and clothing. So I suggest you get a part time job before you hand in that form.

It's not all bad news though, since you're doing A levels, if you're doing them full time you can apply for education maintenance allowance. I don't know about south of the border, but in Scotland the maximum per week per person is £30. If you can't get by well you can always ask your parents for an allowance since they asked you to do this.

Work out your finances before you move though, find the minimum wage for your age, and estimate the cost of your bills per month so you can work out roughly how many hours a week you'll need to work.. try not to over do it seeing as you're doing school this year.

I'm currently looking into housing with my mate Kim so this is how I know stuff like this :P

Good luck to ye. :)

quarky agony auntyou should also be entitled to support by way of further education grants and possibly other financial support. There may be help and advice available at college or maybe try citizen's advice or other such organisations.

flat share will probably be the best option, try to find ones where students already share-the more, the cheaper! College notice board or local papers and local shop windows are places to look!

good luck

A female reader, anonymous, writes (3 July 2009):

hey there!

Living together is probably the best option for you at the moment. You would be used to having your parents around or someone at home and living by yourself for the first time can be quite scary or lonely. Living with another person can ease the transition. ALTHOUGH, living with another person who is not family can be more difficult and you learn a lot about your friendship. Living with someone else can really test the bounderies, so beware! Make rules when you move in and stick with them.

You can go to your local estate/ letting agents. They usually take you around viewings for free and won't charge you a think for asking about what to do next. Tell them of your situation and i'm sure they would be happy to help you. Do your research in the areas to make sure you don't get a flat in a bad area. You may need to pay a bit more for a good area, but you are splitting the bills anyway right? Best to be safe.

Have fun.

A female reader, Starlights United Kingdom +, writes (3 July 2009):

Starlights agony auntyou could either rent a flat together with your friend and share bills or move into a roomshare (which means u rent a room in a house share).

you would in most cases need money to put down as a deposit first and how much rent is charged depends on the area you live.

try looking in your nearest estate agent website for places to rent, local newspapers, and websites like gumtree.uk

good luck!!
