 It doesn't always hurt on the first time. It depends a lot on your physiology and how slowly you take it. If you've already "popped your cherry" (broken your hymen, like on a bike or something like that -- which is possible) then it's even less likely that it will hurt.
How he goes about it will make a huge difference. If there's LOTS of foreplay to make sure your excited and ready, if you use extra lubrication, and if he takes it really slow (maybe start with fingers and work up to his penis, then insert it slowly rather than just pushing it in) you have much better odds.
In general, don't let a guy (any guy) go faster than you're ready for. If it hurts, stop. Your first time might be uncomfortable, but if it "hurts like hell" then don't continue.
There will probably be some bleeding in any case (not always, but frequently) but it shouldn't be a lot.
That said, if he's REALLY big he would give "experienced" women pause. Be very careful that this is the guy you want to have for your first time. If you're not sure, there's nothing wrong with waiting. Any guy worth having will wait until you're ready. If he won't wait, dump him and good riddance.

The first time will hurt, because you will feel nervous about it hurting and that will make you tense.
The best thing you can do is make the atmosphere as relaxing as possible, don't do it whenyou know you only have a limited amount of time until someone comes home, or whatever. Maybe go away for a night, bring some candles, have a bubble bath together, spend the evening relaxing and enjoying each others company.
The main thing to do is spend a lot of time on foreplay. This is really important for girls who take a lot longer to get 'warmed up' than guys. Get him to spend at least 20-30 minutes giving you his sole attention. Then take it from there, guaranteed you won't feel as nervous and it won't hurt very much, if at all.
Personally speaking, my first time hurt, and looking back after having experience, it was because there was basically no foreplay, we just went right into it, and it was much more painful than pleasureable!! Just make sure he gives you lots of clitoral stimulation all throughout...!!

 if you are a virgin, it is likely to bleed anyway because it's the first time, and it more often than not hurts the first few times until your used to it.
as for it being too big, you'd be suprised, but make sure you use lots of lubricant and are wet enough for him to enter because otherwise it'll be virtually impossible for him to go in anyway. and try to relax, this alows the muscles in your cirvix to open more freely.
