Why did my ex put on facebook a photo of us?

A female United Kingdom age 36-40, anonymous writes:

My ex of 3 months has just put an old photo of us together up as his profile picture. Loads of friends clicked on like etc. Saying 'be happy' etc. I'm so angry. I put up a status saying 'I'm single single single single single. The camera never lies but the photo is over a year old. Some people can't accept reality'. He saw it straight away and was really hurt and said I'm being unkind and hurtful. Also emotionally immature. I guess it was immature. I took down the comment but - was I wrong? Was he wrong?

So_Very_Confused agony auntwell I think you should

a. ask him to take it down. it may just be that he liked the picture. I just put one up that's nearly 3 years old... but i just wanted to change what was up there...

b. he may not have meant anything by it... did you ask him or did you just react?

if his behavior still bothers you so much you are not done your grieving of the relationship and it would probably be wise to unfriend him on facebook to aid in the healing process.

R1 agony auntI think your response was a little insensitive but that doesn't mean he was in the right for putting up the picture. I would put it behind you and try not to respond to him over Facebook - I know it's tempting and we've all done it but its too public and people get hurt.

A male reader, anonymous, writes (10 April 2013):

What kind of "friends" are these that tell you to be happy if the picture is over a year old? Obviously they are "facebook friends" and not actual friends.

This isn't an attempt to justify him putting up an old picture to masquerade as a current couple. That is not right and you should ask that it be removed right away. If he doesn't simply comment on the picture and politely mention that it is over 1 year old, that you are no longer together and that you appreciate if he removed it.

A male reader, CMMP United States +, writes (10 April 2013):

Well, was it a picture of you guys in a unique place? Like standing in front of the Eifel Tower or the Great Wall of China?

If it was just the two of you looking happy sitting on the couch then you were right to be irritated. But you could have just asked him to take it down.
