Hiya hun i would advise you to take a trip to Primark the clothes are really cheap and as trendy as anything you'll find in other shops. You can usually get an outfit for £20 including shoes. And it's true what they say you can't buy style I have a full time job but still shop in cheaper shops coz things go out of fashion really quickly so you don't feel guilty if you only wear them a few times. People always say they like my style and yet I know girls who spend 100's of pounds on bags and shoes and look awful! So just feel confident in yourself and work your own style1

Also with regards to a job working part time as a waitress during the week is a good way to earn extra money, plus the tips can be good. I did this while at schoool and college and loved it made loads of mates and there was loads of fit fellas!!! Hope this helps Becci

A female reader, TELLULAH United Kingdom +, writes (16 May 2007):

TELLULAH agony auntHi Honey,

Firstly, you cannot buy style. You would be amazed at some of the great stuff you can get in charity shops and even some of the cheap markets. My advice would be to get everything you have got in you wardrobe and look at it real carefull. Lay it all out, and put it into colours, as well as all your shoes and bags etc. Then go through the latest fashion magazines, and see what you have that would be simular. When you can afford to buy something new, go for fairly plain, but that will go with your other items. Anything you dont wear, put it on EBAY. And start to build up your wardrobe that way.

Babysitting would suit you best because you can study as well as earn some money.

And as a last thought, how good are you at sewing. You seem to have a passion for clothes. You can pick up cloth so cheap now, and its really easy to start making your own clothes. If you see a top you like in a charity shop, but its not the right colour or its a bit tatty, you can buy it then take it apart for the pattern.

This is how I started when i was really young, and before I knew it I was making clothes for all my mates. You can charge them a small amount for doing this. And how great if you can do it, to have the latest outfits all made by you.

Good luck XX

A female reader, DrPsych United Kingdom +, writes (16 May 2007):

DrPsych agony auntUnder UK law you are entitled to work a certain number of hours per week under the age of 16. If you don't have much time then you should become a young entrepreneur. I had jobs since the age of 10 - papergirl, cleaning and minor clerical tasks that were all handy life experience. In this technological age, you could start your own ebay auction business - sell stuff you no longer want or buy and sell. You are interested in clothing so go to car boot sales or charity shops and pick up a few items and see if you can sell them for a profit...start small and see how you go. You need to be 18 to start an ebay account I believe so ask a parent or older sibling to back you up.

A reader, anonymous, writes (16 May 2007):

I did a paper round (paperboy) as soon as I was old enough. I ended up doing 4! 1 in the mornings before school and 3 different rounds after school. I made so much money, and it kept me incredably fit too!

The laws have changed a bit since my day but I looked up this information from http://www.adviceguide.org.uk/index/life/employment/young_people_and_employment.htm for you:

There are some extra rules about the employment of children under 14. If you are under 14, you are not allowed to work at all except in the following types of work:-

to take part in sport, advertising, modelling, plays, films, television or other entertainment. The employer must apply for a licence from the local authority

to do odd jobs for a parent, relative or neighbour

to do babysitting – see under heading Babysitting.

However, children of 13 or above may be able to do some other types of work, depending on the by-laws of the local authority in their area. For example, the by-laws may say that children of 13 and above in your area can do a paper-round, or that you can do light work which is not likely to be harmful to your health, safety or development.

A female reader, Cateyes United States +, writes (16 May 2007):

Cateyes agony auntWhen I was your age, I did various jobs because I to, wanted better clothes and wanted to save for a car that I knew my parents could not afford to buy me. When I was in junior high school - at 15, I did baby-sitting, cut lawns / yard work, worked for a catering service which included washing dishes and setting the brides and grooms tables up (and I was 15 doing that and they paid me cash - but it was also because I knew someone who knew them)and I even helped a cleaning service clean business buildings - empty trash cans, clean desks, etc.. These jobs normally happened in the evening time. Best thing to do would be to let some of your friends parents know that you would like to earn some extra cash and they might have a job for you to do or know someone who could also use your assitance. Something to think about, when I was in high school, I got in to what they call here in the US..Distributive Education. I went to school half a day and worked half a day and was able to get all my homework, etc done as well. I went to work for a few places my teacher put me in contact with however, he finally landed me a job in banking...which believe it or not, that is what I do today and I am 40 years "young". I am now a VP and Branch Manager of a Bank. Just something to think about and I hope some of this may have helped you as well. Good Luck!!!

A female reader, cd206 United Kingdom +, writes (16 May 2007):

cd206 agony auntProbably nobody would employ you anyway because you need to have a national insurance number to get any job that doesn't pay cash in hand. Why not shop for clothes in charity shops? It's not all old lady clothes... or see if there are things you can do round the house to earn money? I hope you find some way of earning the money for the clothes you want but if not there are always birthdays and christmases. It might feel really unfair that you can't have what you want straight away but this is a great lesson to learn. People who have everything served up to them on a plate don't appreciate the value of money at all so on one level you're lucky.

Have you thought of a paper round after work? Are there any shops in your area that open late? Perhaps you might be able to get a part time job in there?

Maybe you can offer a car cleaning service to friends and family in the evenings for a tot of cash.

Odd jobs like dog walking or house cleaning etc. I was thinking babysitting but you might not be old enough for that.

Jamer70 agony auntWell since your exams are most likely coming up i suggest you use this time to study (I didnt)and just get your exams out of the way firstly.

Then in the summer a lot of jobs open up so you can start to search then, when you have alot of free time on your hands.

PS:up to date clothes wont make you look ugly and good luck with exams
