I was wondering what you would have to do in case of an STD to check a guy for all possible diseases. Is the urethral swab (I think that's what it's called) or a blood test the only way of thoroughly checking, or will a urine test or a less intrusive examination suffice?

best way would be to go to the std clinic - get details from the web, give false names and they do the tests for most things. you go back a few days later for the results.

A point of fact for the boys - to be swabbed there is only one way to get to the important part (its not painful, just a bit of a shock...) and they use a type of cotton bud...try not to get the trainee.

Tisha-1 agony auntHi, good for you for asking that your boyfriend be tested. I think asking him to undergo a swab or a blood test is a little price for what he's asking you to risk. So stick to your guns here! If he can't tolerate a swab, for heaven's sake, are you sure you're dating a real MAN? (LOL, just kidding here!)

I found this link which may help you understand the types of STDs than can be transmitted and how they are tested or examined for.

Unfortunately, it seems to speak to women, but I think essentially the same exam would be done on a man, with similar swabs, blood tests and urine tests. This is a simple and basic precaution to protect your health and well-being as well as his own. It seems to me to be a no-brainer.

Good luck!

Thank you. My boyfriend and I have been using a condom (I am also on the pill) but he has asked about not using a condom and I told him the only way I would consider it is if he'd get tested. I guess the hardest part is persuading him to get a swab lol.

k_c100 agony auntAn STD test (one done at a proper clinic) will do a swab and blood test. You can specify what you want to test for if you think you have certain symptons however if you want them to check for all STD's then they will have to do both parts of the test.

If you just go to your doctors then they can do a urine test which will test for a very limited number but this will not give you a full indication for all STD's.

I understand that the idea of an intrusive swab will really put a man off but it is neccessary if you have had unprotected sex. It will hurt a little but its over pretty quickly. It is better to be safe and get treatment if neccessary rather than becoming ill all down to pride and fear.

Go to your nearest sexual health clinic, hospital or doctors and they will be able to book you an appointment.

Good luck!
