I'm in my late adolesent years and I'm not exactly an expert. I guess I'm on the same page as well, although I am on these so called "happy pills". I didn't exactly want to take them because i too was confused of the purpose.

"How the hell does a pill help you become happier?"

That was pretty much my main question..

But let me tell you, they are wonders if you get the right ones. I haven't been fighting with my mother so frequently and I don't just cry for no reason. They have helped a great deal and It's amazing how much one pill can effect the chemical imbalance in the brain.

If you're depressed, go talk to your parents and a family physician about the pills and how you'd go about getting them.

I hope i helped atleast a bit.

Good luck :]

Antidepressants will actually increase depression in teens a lot of the time. I was depressed for a whole year when I was 17 and even 18. You need to live life on the edge until you're 19. It'll keep you alive until you get better. :)

aunty chrissie agony aunthi there, your dad would say that if he is really depressed because a depressed person is very very unhappy without the tablets. how do you know you are depressed what signs have you got. tablets are a very dangerous thing if in the wrong hands and taken wrongly. you are so young and so much to look forward to. i know many people who have taken anti dep and some have been helped by taking them but most of them live like a zombi, the problem is just put to one side temporary, but it has to be faced in the end, if you have a problem please talk to someone about it, if you cant talk to family go to the doctors, if you prefer to see a lady doctor ask. but try other methods first.

A reader, anonymous, writes (12 June 2008):

It's not as simple as "they make you happier". Anti depressants are powerful and can be dangerous chemicals. They're not something you should mess around with and your doctor might decide they're not the right option for you anyway as they come with a lot of side effects that may be difficult to deal with.

What most people don't think about is that medication only treats the symptoms - it doesn't deal with the cause of your depression so unless you figure out whats causing it and deal with that first then anti depressants are going to be no use to you at all.

Google it and find out as much about them as you can, then make a sensible decision if you think they may be the best option.

A male reader, Uncle Sneaker United Kingdom +, writes (12 June 2008):

Uncle Sneaker agony auntAnti-depressants are potentially very dangerous drugs and only (in the UK at least) prescribed by a doctor when he is absolutely sure they are necessary. They are NOT something to be taken just to "make you happier". Most of them work by altering the concentration and retention of chemicals in the brain, on the basis that clinical depression is usually caused by (or results in) an inbalance of these chemicals.

If you really think you might need such powerful medication, then go and have a chat with the doctor. Actually, go anyway, because even if you don't need something like that, if you feel you've been depressed for a very long time then I'm sure a good GP could make some suggestions that would help you.

Go to a doctor to see if you need anti-depressants. Just feeling down or sad is not clinical depression. Hell, everyone feels down at 17. :)

A female reader, SugarCookie United States +, writes (12 June 2008):

Anti-depressants are medication that either creates serotonin or causes your nerons in your brain to not reuptake the serotonin naturally created in your brain. Serotonin is a feel good chemical naturally made in the brain. When someone is depressed it can be from either not making enough naturally or it not being sent around your body. Anti-depressents can help with the problem but at your age they can also make everything a lot worse. If you do try to take anti-depressamts make sure that you stay in touch with your doctor and you have at least one person that you can talk to at any point in the day in case you start to feel suicidal. Also talking to someone means they can see if your personality changes and you become mean which can happen also.
