Hi, I've been thinking carefully about going on the Pill for a while now and think it's the right thing to do. My only worry is that it'll make me gain weight (vanity I know!) What have your experiences with the Pill been like? I really don't want to undo my diet and exercise haha.

LilPixie agony auntWell, it's not the pill itself that makes you gain weight. It's the change of hormones in your body that may make you more hungry and therefore gain weight.

The only way to know whether it works for you or not is to try it. It may also take trying different brands until you find one that suits you best.

chigirl agony auntI never experienced a difference in my body when I went on the pill other than my breasts getting fuller. But this varies a lot! A friend of mine went up a bra size when she got on the pill. Some gain weight (just because they eat more, increased appetite), some don't. Some get pimples, some lose pimples... It varies way too much to be able to tell you exactly how you will react to it. Many don't experience any changes at all.

dmartin89 agony auntYou gain weight from eating too much and not exercising enough. The only way the pill contributes to weight gain is increasing appetite. I've never had this problem, I'm hungrier around my totm anyway...I just make sure to make an extra trip to the gym to balance it out.

A female reader, KeighleySky United Kingdom +, writes (5 June 2011):

KeighleySky agony auntWith my pill i didnt gain any weight, some people do and some dont. It all depends on your body.

Just try it, if you start to gain weight and you dont like it then you can always stop.

But at your age its better to gain a bit of weight through the pill than pregnancy, dont you think?

The first kind of birthcontrol i took was the pill, and i gained alot of weight. I'm assuming it depends on your body. Theres people who don't gain weight from it, and theres peolpe who have. I...have gained ALOTTTTTT of weight from the pill. I have tried MANY birthcontrols to find one that wouldn't give me terrible side effects, and make me gain weight. The only birthcontrol i used that didn't cause to much of a side effect was Nuva ring. Its a like a jelly bracelet almost, and you insert it in your...you know what. So, i would talk to your doctor about that. It worked really well, and i didnt gain much.

A female reader, fi_the_tree United Kingdom +, writes (5 June 2011):

fi_the_tree agony auntI've been on the same pill for 10 years now, i don't remember gaining any weight from taking it either. I really like my pill actually, i easily remember to take it (this is a problem for some) and i get regular periods, so regular that i can time it down to what part of the day it comes (morning/afternoon/evening!!!)

There are alot of good things about the pill, and i can't fault mine. But you need to talk with your doctor about what contraception is available to you. I mean, you can get contraception that can stop periods altogether, you can get one to help if you have really bad cramps, or a really heavy flow!!

It depends what you want from your contraception. Go and see your doctor and talk through your options!

I would suggest talking to your Dr about it too, as the side effects are different for everyone.

Personally I have gained weight, but it was alright cause I'm still healthy and eat right and exercise all the time. Remember.. the pill doesn't make u gain weight, it makes you have an increased appetite, and can make you retain water more.

A female reader, Aunty Susie Australia +, writes (5 June 2011):

Aunty Susie agony auntI never gained weight when on the Pill. Women have many different experiences with it. Just discuss your concerns with your doctor when you go for the prescription. The most important thing is to not smoke.

A female reader, based51 Ireland +, writes (5 June 2011):

based51 agony auntI didn't gain any weight at all when I went on the Pill but the extra dosage of estrogen did make my boobs grow a cup size (which I'm not complaining about as they are teeny).

There's many possible side effects of the Pill as there are with any tablets but you won't know how its going to affect you until you try it for a few months. I knew some women who had a horrible experience with it but the majority seem to have gotten on fine with it. Also, there are different Pills that you can try.

As for me, I found that all outcomes of taking the Pill worked well for me. It's great if you're having problems with period pain, irregularity, or losing too much blood. :)
