Should I go back to my old job? I worry that the store manager does not like me and I suffer social anxiety. Or should I look for something else?

A female United States age 30-35, anonymous writes:

For 3 summers I have worked at a retail store, and then leave when I go back to college for the year.

When I work there, I always feel very unconfident because I worry that the store manager doesn't like me, and I always feel like I am under surveillance by the higher-ups (we all are, but I am extremely conscious of it).

Going on the register is also scary for me because unusual circumstances might come up that I forget or never learned how to handle, and I feel so stupid when I have to ask a question.

If I make a mistake, I feel so incompetent. I also struggle with social anxiety, so it is sometimes difficult for me to initiate interaction with customers, though I think I do well generally.

I decided that I wanted to get a new summer job because I don't think I'm growing at this retail store anymore, and I wanted something that would make me feel good about myself instead of on-edge.

However, I'm having a tough job finding a job, and I have been on break for a month and a half now. I know that there is a 98% chance that working at the retail store is a phone call away...

Do you think I should just go back, or keep looking for a different summer job?

Sageoldguy1465 agony auntYou've spent three summers at this job.... and you think that the "higher ups" do not/may not like you???? How inconsistent it THAT??? If they didn't like you - or didn't think you were doing a good job - how dumb would they have had to be to keep hiring you back????????

Of course you do a good job!!! ... and, considering the prospects of other jobs being available, I think you ought to jump right back in to where you fit - this job - have a great time, do a good job, and - come September - log on to this site, look at this submittal, and say to yourself: "WHAT THE HECK WAS I THINKING?!?!?!?!

Good luck... and have a great Summer!!!!

CindyCares agony aunt I think you should just go back. I think that you are looking for a new job in part, surely, for the reasons you mention, but in part - to run away from a challenge. Your old job was challenging for you and you hope that miraculously all this will go away in a new setting.

Maybe it would and justt as likely,or more, maybe it would not.

You suffer from social anxiety, so the challenge is within you , not in the environment ; all that you mention is simply normal part and parcel of any job experience : the possibility of not being liked by your higher-ups, the fact of having your performance monitored and evaluated, of something new sprouting up and finding you unprepared, the need for asking questions etc.etc. Who tells you that in the new job everything would come up roses and you would not meet any challenge ?

In the old job at least you know the environment, what to expect , you know what the obstacles are, and, in 3 years, hopefully you have learned to navigate a bit around them. Plus, if they keep taking you back year after year , that means they must LIKE you, does not this give you a little more confidence ? :)
