 I think it varies really from person to person, some guys will go for hairy, while some guys will opt for smooth. Myself i like somewhere in the middle, not to hairy, but more hair than none atal. Just go for what you feel comfortable with.

 The dutch playboy just had an anniversary and one of the subjects that came up on a newspaper article was the whole shaving thing. Contrary to what you might think, the editor did not like it. It shows to much and playboy is not a porn mag after all. So he was glad that now the trend seems to be reversing.
Mind you, guys your age seem almost obsessed with it, perhaps due to the influence of porn that their should be no hair down there.
Older men tend to A: go with the flow B: prefer a "natural look". That is trimmed and taken care off but not bald.
Go with what you are comfortable with and if a guy doesn't like it tell him he can take a hike.

It won't start attacking him when you don't want it too, yet (as Waterloo Sunset rightly pointed out) won't look like a skinned rabbit.

 Each guy has different preferences - some like it shaved, some find shaved girls too much like a child, some like it all natural... It's all down to individual preference.
Whether you want to shave or not is entirely your decision. But keep in mind that once you start, it's difficult to stop. I'd recommend waxing rather than shaving for a longer lasting result.
