A male United Kingdom age 41-50, *hnnyboo writes:

i have an 18 yr old mate who has just been to court for sex with a girl 13. now take in mind that he is 18. he says hes not on the sex offenders register has no sex offenders programme to go on and is allowed to carry on seeing this child.

i also had this other mate who was 24 and slept with a 15 yr old now he has been told he has to go on the register for at least ten years has a 2 yr suspended sentence and has 2 yrs programme to go on.

my question is how can this be. is this right what has happened or should the 18 yr old have the same punishment.

No it is definitly not right and your laws are screwy. And no Complicated*One the state of the relationship could not matter in the least. If you think this kind of relationship is okay then you got issues or perhaps have never experienced this problem first hand. Personally i could never think of these kind of relationships to be acceptible. This is because it is always a guy who cant get girls his own age and a girl that is inexperienced in relationships (I see this all the time and i feel ashamed for the guy and sorry for the girl). Now i do believe age diferences can be over come if both are adults but not when one is an adult and the other a child. And this is the reason for what Rach xxx brings up at least in my country; a child can not legally give consent so therefore the responsiblity is solely on the adult who should know better, which is in most cases is the guy. Just happens that way.

A female reader, Complicated*One United Kingdom +, writes (11 January 2008):

Hey,

u never mentioned how long these relationships were going on??? and u didnt say if any complaints had been made by the girls....this is wrong however when i was 13 i was seein a 17 year old....i dont think it is wrong to be with someone at that age, however i did not have sex with him we did do various other things. i think if the 13 year old new what she wanted and had been with someone of the age of 18 for a long time i cannot see why this is a problem. As for the 15 year old issue....most girls at 15 sleep with anything they can get hold of and u may even find that they are very spiteful if they dont get their own way and will make things for the lad seem much much worse. if you dont feel comfortable with these people get out of their friendship group...but personally i dont think they are doin anything wrong. take care.

A female reader, anonymous, writes (11 January 2008):

I know the law says no sex with under 16's .. but come on, at 15, 99% of girls are willing to open their legs, if anything they egg the man on to do it.. yet only the man gets punished. and these girls are free to target their next victim.

whereas 13 is young .. at that age you can be pressured into making wrong decisions a lot easier, i reckon the 18 yr old should've got a much harsher punishment, and as for the 24yr old, i reckon going on the register for 10 year is just silly, they put ppl on the register these days for the most silly things. That being one of them.

13 years old, that is an innocent childs youth lost, sorry but i think the law is not tough enough. Prison sentences should be long for such kinds of people. You need to review your friends list. It is nearly as bad for the other friend of yours.

Jamer70 agony auntWell first of all you need new mates.

Second the judge presides over the cases and punishes as he sees fit. I guess in this cases he thought that him being just of legal age (18) he shouldnt be punished, while your other friend who was 24 was well into the legal age so he was punished.

This is another case of lenient british judges, the law isnt so black and white as we think.

Dr Vendetta agony aunti guess this depends on all the Judge..

5 years different with the 18 year old.

As apposed to 9 years for the 24 year old.

I'm not going to say 13 and 18 is acceptable. however as a 24 year old you're past the age of 21, you're basicly legal to do everything world wide that the law allows. Drive, smoke, drink, gamble and vote.

That would be my line of reasoning for it.

A female reader, goodlistener United Kingdom +, writes (11 January 2008):

Hello i hope i can give you a bit of insight.

The sentence ect. is pruely down to the judge, he will listen to the situation and will rule on what he thinks is the best he has in mind.

When i was 13 i was going out with a 23 year man, my mum was a lone parent and worked full time. She knew if she got rid of him i would run away, so she had no choice but to let him live in my room with me. I got into trouble with the law with him when i was 14. We both got arrested and i keeped getting questioned about our relationship. Well when he had to go to court, he was not in anyway sentenced through it. The court saw he was such a big influence on me, in my best interest he would be responsable for me. That ment that he would get into troule if i didnt go to school.

Well i don't think i have completely answered your question, but i hope it has helped.

Good Luck,

Always Here,

Tracy x.
