Really heavy menstrual bleeding. Is this normal for my age?

A female United Kingdom age 26-29, anonymous writes:

I'm fourteen, and I've had my period since I was 11. It's been on and off which I know is normal, but it's recently settled down, and this month I've had a really long, heavy period. It started on the 11th and hasn't stopped since. It started off light but now it is seriously heavy. I use sanitary towels, and usually I only have to change them once every five hours or so, but today, one didn't last 2 hours, I had to get two off my best friend.

Sometimes the towels don't work completely and I have seriously ruined some of my underwear.

I am absolutely sick of this.

Is this normal for my age, and do you think it would be a good idea for me to ask my mum to switch to tampons?

HardToExplain agony auntI'm 14 and have had my period since I was 10 and also sometimes experience longer than usual periods, and very very heavy ones. I don't want to frighten you or anything but you should definitely go and get checked out by a doctor! Who knows, maybe there isn't something wrong now and it's just one of those odd things that just happen sometimes! Just feel safe in the hands of your doctor! Also, about the tampons, I really do think they're a better than pads, but that's my opinion, they do take sometime to get used to but they'll be worth it! Mind you, tampons aren't for everyone, if you don't feel comfortable wearing them, you don't have to! I find wearing a pad with a tampon is super protection and I feel safe and comfortable all day, sorry if there was anything with too much info then, haha. I hope I helped and that you're back to normal soon x

Hey sweetie, you really need to see your doctor as you probably have a condition called Menorrhagia in your cause it could be an overload of hormones due to your age, that are stimulating the blood loss, and this could led to anaemia where your RBC red blood count will be quite low making you feel lethargic and quite sick.

I'm a RMNurse and I agree with all the other post, you need to go see mom right away, even if it stops..

Gives us an update and let's us all know you are doing ok..

Take care

person12345 agony auntYou need to see a doctor, what's happening isn't normal. It's probably nothing serious, but no matter what you need to see them just to get everything sorted.

I'm sure there is some medication you can take to make it stop, I don't know what it is really, but my mother was having such heavy periods that she was feeling dizzy, she believed due to the blood loss... she went to the doctor and he prescribed something I'm not sure if it were some contraceptive pill, anyway it worked...

Tisha-1 agony auntYou've had a period for 2 weeks and today it was so heavy you went through 3 pads in just a few hours? I think it's time to tell your mother about this, it sounds abnormally heavy, honestly.

Tell her you think you need a doctor, okay?

I have an online symptom checker tool for you to use, show your mum the results, okay? Here's the link: https://www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk/CheckSymptoms/SATs/aaRouterWeb.aspx

When I put in your symptoms, it told me that you need to make an appointment with your GP within the week.

Good luck!
