bonym agony auntGenerally the tests are pretty accurate but as with most man made things they are not error free, however as I said they are usually very good predictors. As Hannieseds said, go to the docs for a real test, one that is definative and will give you a proper answer. xXx

maxsteel86 agony auntThose things aren't 100% accurate and do give false readings sometimes. I used one once and it came back positive!!! Crazy test...

Anyway, like the last poster said, stress is a real problem for the cycle so to put your mind to rest, just get the doctor to give you a test. You'll know for sure then

A female reader, hannieseds New Zealand +, writes (23 August 2006):

hannieseds agony auntHey girl,

I was in the same boat last month, except I was 5 weeks late! So I know how freaky this situation can be, along with many many other women out there.

My test came back negative but I was convinced that it was wrong because I just felt like I was pregnant. Two days later I got my period.

These tests are pretty accurate, 99% I think, but the only real way to ease your mind is to get a urine/blood test at your doctor/family planning clinic. Of course self-tests always have a slightly higher rate of messing up - did you make sure you followed the instructions very very carefully?

Have you been stressed/worrying about something lately? I was soooo stressed that I thought I was pregnant that I think that is why I was late. Stresses and worries can affect your body and your cycle in crazy ways, so perhaps this is what has happened to you, since your test did say negative.

My suggestion would be to take another test in the next few days. If it's still negative, then you will know that it is probably just worry and stress. But if you want to ease your mind 100%, head along to your doctor and get her/him to give you a 'proper' test. xxx
