Ok this might be a silly question but I really need to figure this out. Summer is here ! I have been tanning for a couple of years but think I should stop because of all the skin cancer issues that it can cause. Plus the money issues i'm having at the moment. The thing is I'm really pale I have a red head complextion with dark brown hair and eyes and I think I look better tan. I don't wanna look Goth What can I do ? Should I dye my Hair or something ? Or should I just let people mistake me for Mourtisha Adams from the Adams family ! How can I play off my pale skin ? Thanks for any advice you can give :)

Skellington agony auntFor me, pale skin and dark hair are a must. Pale skin was once a very desirable trait back in the old days and the dark hair just set it off even more. My girlfriend fits the bill on both of those and so do I. :D We fit the bill for your traditional romantic goth couple.

A female reader, Tinysplatty United Kingdom +, writes (17 June 2009):

Tinysplatty agony auntHey hun,

Well I myself think that pale skin with dark hair looks beautiful. But it all comes down to a matter of taste...some people dig it, some don't. It sounds as if you don't, and that's what matters at the end of the day.

If you really want to be tanned, then there is always fake tan, which doesnt have to be expensive and can look good if done correctly. Or maybe opt for a subtler option and try one of those body moisturisers that give you a 'summer glow' and the like.

Or like you said...you could dye your hair, possibly blonde or light brown. However, going from dark to light can be damaging to your hair because it normally involves bleach. By dark, I'm not sure if you mean your hair is black or dark brown...but if it's dark brown, maybe get highlights? That would definately make you look more 'summery'.

You could also try experimenting with makeup...use brighter make up, such as bright eye shadows, bright lipsticks or some blush so you don't look so pale. And you won't look like Morticia Adams providing you stay away from the thick black eyeliner lol. As for looking like a goth, that won't happen, because it doesn't just depend on your skin and hair. Make up, clothes an accessories all play a major part in your overall look and style.

As a last resort...maybe just try to embrace your natural beauty! Try sticking with pale skin and dark hair for a while. See what people have to say about it. For all you know, it might just grow on you (no pun intended).

Good luck!

If your natural skin tone is dark, it looks nice, and if you are naturally pale, that looks nice too. Keeping it natural is the most attractive thing.

Danielepew agony auntFatherly, Morticia spoke French but she was hot :-). I may not have gotten the idea of the show correctly, however, as I was a kid when the show was on TV.

I have noticed what you say about liking women of a certain style, too. And the attraction remains long after the woman is gone :-).

See ya!

The most beautiful woman I know has BLINDINGLY white skin and jet black hair. Don't go tanning, it's bad for you! Pale skin and dark hair can be stunning. I have a very pale complexion and dark brown hair and brown eyes and I'm happy with the way I look (as are many people). I don't try to tan in the summer and usually stay pale/fair all year. My roommate is even fairer than I am with darker hair than me and brown eyes as well and it looks lovely. I don't know WHY tan got to be the new gold standard (no pun intended) as it just looks silly on many people, especially those of us who are naturally fair. I look really odd tan! For a long time I thought that in order to be beautiful in the summer I would need to tan and wear bronzer and all sorts of things to make me look darker, but after awhile I learned to embrace my fairness and I realized I looked better that way.

Fatherly Advice agony auntDaniel, I thought Gomez Was Crazy about Morticia Addams, because she could speak French.

Anyway back to the main topic. Yes don't ruin your future skin by baking it in ultra violet light. It prematurely ages it. You have got good advice on sunless solutions.

Beauty and appeal are not so rigidly defined. Men find many different types of women attractive as Daniel has demonstrated. I find that after I've become interested in a woman, for whatever reason, I begin to be attracted to women who have similar features. In the teens and twenty's it is more about a look, as we mature our needs in companionship get more complicated.

Confuzzled012 agony auntTo stop tanning will be be worth it once you get older. You sound gorgeous with light skin so don't worry about a thing. Natural is better.

I think it would look better than dark everything.. eyes, hair, and skin.

Sounds very pretty. You don't have to look gothic at all if you wear the right clothing to expess yourself and the right jewelry/makeup.

And some lighter highlgihts if you want, but hair colouring to me is too hard and expensive to keep up with.
