A female reader, Tisha-1 United States +, writes (11 November 2010):

Tisha-1 agony auntOh dear. You engaged in unprotected sex? Sperm can live for days in your reproductive vagina and uterus and basically hang out waiting for an egg to appear. If you ovulated during this time that they are viable, they could well have met up.

Here are some links for you, alas, I don't have the time to summarize this for you right now. As you are the one who is engaging in unprotected sex, it's up to you to be educated about it, so take the time to read this information. There may be a pop quiz later.

In a perfect world, with you ovulating precisely on cue (which is extremely unlikely), you would have ovulated on October 28. As you had sex on the 23rd, and sperm can live for several days, yes, there is a possibility that you could have become pregnant.

A female reader, k_c100 United Kingdom +, writes (11 November 2010):

k_c100 agony auntDid you use a condom or birth control? Aunt Honesty's advice was spot on, but what she didnt mention is that if you have unprotected sex at ANY time of the month, even during your period - you CAN still get pregnant. As Aunt Honesty said, ovulation, while it should happen around the 14th day, it can be delayed or early due to a number of factors. So you cannot tell when you are ovulating unless you use a specific kit that tells you such a thing.

And even if you are not ovulating, you can still get pregnant! There are plenty of occasions where sperm have lasted a bit longer than normal, swam their way up the fallopian tubes and found an egg that has been released early and Bingo! You are pregnant.

The ONLY way to guarantee that you DONT get pregnant is to have sex using condoms + birth control OR dont have sex at all.

So if you have had unprotected sex then YES there is a very good chance you are pregnant. Wait until you are due for your next period, and if you miss it - take a pregnancy test.

I hope this helps and good luck!

A female reader, aunt honesty Ireland +, writes (11 November 2010):

aunt honesty agony auntI will tell you some basics about ovulation, for you to understand it. It is the release of a single, mature egg from a follicle that developed in the ovary and it usually occurs regularly, around 14th day of a 28-day menstrual cycle. Once the egg is released, it is capable of being fertilized for 12 to 48 hours before it begins to disintegrate and this is the most fertile period of a womans cycle. During ovulation, chances of conception are highest. The exact time of ovulation can vary within the cycle, because it can be delayed by a number of factors such as stress, illness, diet or increased physical activity. Fertile period starts about 4-5 days before ovulation and it ends about 24-48 hours after it. Sperm can live in body for approximately 4 to 5 days, and the egg can live for 24 to 48 hours after being released. Your most fertile on the day before and the day of ovulation. Knowing fertile days can help increase chances of getting pregnant, or in other case, avoid an unwanted pregnancy.
