Is it appropriate to give the mother an anniversary gift?

A female United States age 36-40, anonymous writes:

Hi, I have a quick question having more to do with etiquette. I've been exclusively dating a guy for a couple of months and we've hit it off extraordinarily well, so we are pretty serious about each other. We're in our late twenties and his parents are having a milestone anniversary soon. I have only met his mother once, briefly, and not the father as he is in another country for a while. My boyfriend has a very close relationship with his mother in particular so without really thinking I've gotten her a little gift for her anniversary (a teapot set with tea balls that bloom into flowers in the water). I didn't get anything for the father because I haven't met him. However, the mother is flying out to see him for the anniversary so I guess I could put something together.

My question is, is it all right for me to give her this gift without getting anything for the father, or is it weird to give her a gift at all? Thanks.

Honeypie agony auntThe Fudge is a perfect extra little touch even if you don't know the Dad, they can enjoy the tea and fudge together :)

Thanks for responses guys, you've reassured me! The teapot set is nicely done up in a bag. What I decided to also do was make some homemade fudge for the dad and indicate that they should enjoy it together. Thanks again all!

llifton agony auntdefinitely thoughtful and sweet. seeing as how you haven't met the father yet, i see no reason to feel the need to get him a gift. doubtful he will be offended. lol.

I'd just put the gift to the both of them, with her name first.

It's their anniversary so I wouldn't get individual gifts as its a day for them both to celebrate. I see your point you haven't met his dad but I'd wrap the teapot (be good if it has two or more cups!) and label it to the two of them.
